I have always been fascinated with the medical field ever since I was little, my first choice for electives were always health science and anatomy classes. After my cousin, Deanna, had her first child and receive her first ultrasound, I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The ultrasound technician had made her feel so comforted and just made the entire experience enjoyable for everyone; I’m eager to be able to start my life with a job that I know I will love. Anytime that I meet someone who is in the field themselves, I always ask questions and listen to what they do throughout the day to get some real insight on what being a technician really entails. I have been attending Wake Technical Community College for the past
two years and have gained a lot of from the experience. Since enrolling after high school, I’ve learned how to become a more sophisticated student with better study habits and a newfound interest in the English language. Attending this community college has given me a better understanding of the rigor in specific classes and how to adapt accordingly. Throughout the last two years, I was able to grow as an adult and learn to balance school, work, and a social life. Although it was tough at first, I persevered and the result worked out in my favor. The main reason that I want to transfer for a four- year university, UNC Chapel Hill specifically is because of the possibilities and opportunities it can offer me. Wake Tech is a great school and it gave me a sense of appreciation for education, but I want to continue my education with something that I am passionate about, the medical field, in one of the top public schools in the country. In the next two years in obtaining my bachelors degree, I hope to become more integrated with clubs and activities around the school. After completing the program, I hope to work as an ultrasound technician or in the cardiac imaging division for about a year before going back to school for a higher education. I plan on going back to UNC Chapel Hill to get a masters degree in radiologic science, after some exposure to the field, and become a radiologist assistant.

When choosing a career there are many factors that I will need to look at: will it be something I enjoy; am I just in it for the money; will the job be around years from now; how will it affect my family and me; how will I benefit from the job; and how will my personality fit in? I used to work at Conroe Regional Medical Center in the Radiology Department and watching everyone scurry around the halls was very exciting to me. I haven’t always wanted to be a cardiac sonographer. The desire to be in this career just started to spark an interest in me a couple years back. You see, since I was a little girl I had always dreamt of becoming an architect or an interior designer. At first, the design aspect of that occupation interested me greatly. My dream started to fall short when I realized that a job like this would require me to make a move to a bigger city and that is something that I do not wish to pursue. This meant it was time to find another path to go down and reconfigure my future.
I want to learn more about the medical field. I am very fascinated in the science aspects. You need to be attentive; sensitive to people’s needs and have a drive to address their needs in an utmost concerned manner. ...really bad pain in my chest and I could not sleep so I made another doctor’s appointment. When I got there, the doctor took a look at my breast and realized that one was much larger than the other. I went right to ultrasound where they found many cysts in my breast. That was one of the most painful but relieving procedures. I was assured that it was not breast cancer and that I should be fine within a few days. I am very thankful for the technology of ultrasound and I want to be able to help people who have been in similar situations like me. During my 2013 summer break, I also took a certified nursing assistant course and have been working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) since September 2013. I am very interested in becoming a student at Seattle University and I would be thrilled to be given the opportunity to be a part of the Diagnostic Ultrasound Program.
I spent the whole year volunteering there like I was one of the doctor’s technicians; they did not just put me in one spot neither. Throughout my senior year I had worked in family health, pediatrics, neurology, the E.R., immunizations, and OB/GYN. Out of all of the places they put me to watch, learn and work I had fallen in love with gynecology. It is just something about helping pregnant women see their babies and helping women get on birth control I like. I found it fascinating to check women’s cervixes for cancer and give women procedures if they had a cyst on their ovary. It was amazing to help women in need and I did not even know that I could fall in love with something in the medical field. This job is also fun because it was a mystery of who would walk in next with their issue and to find out what it was, was so amazing. One time a woman walked in to see the doctor, I was spectating at this point, she said that her breast where bothering her and that they were kind of itchy, then she showed us. I thought to myself, oh that yeast, she has a yeast infection on her boobs and she needs to get it treated because its passing from her baby and back to her because she is breastfeeding.
