During my observership, my clinic intern mentor was Shiyama Hassan. A "Good RA" must possess several different skills and abilities in order to productively assist the building and the community residing in the building. An RA should have the ability to be impartial, they should have the ability to form relationships with a diverse group of people as well as being able to handle many responsibilities at the same time. As an RA, one must deal with any conflicts between roommates. They must have the ability to separate their own feelings about the individuals and/or the conflict and find the best solution for everyone involved. Included in this, an RA must have proficient communication skills. Secondly, a Resident Assistant must be able to build relationships. Throughout my childhood I found that building relationships is a skill that can be practiced over time.
The most challenging clinical assignment would have to be my very first clinical assignment where time management was a challenge for me. I didn’t want to seem too assertive towards my patients which caused me to get behind with obtaining vital signs, performing a head to toe assessment, and ADL’s in a timely manner. This was something I obviously needed to work on because as a nurse this can become a problem when caring for more than one patient. In addition to learning to be more assertive, I also had to learn to plan and prioritize care to be able to accomplish daily tasks effectively for my patient.
I also work as a med-surg nurse, mainly with surgical patients with other medical conditions. I feel I have gained the most knowledge on this floor along with skills. I have remained on the same unit for the last 9 years because of the different experiences and patient outcomes related to the care given. While I do float to other units at times, I don't get the skill and assessment needs that I experience on my own unit. Having an understanding of the patient's care such as the cost of medications is truly a need in healthcare.
My chosen profession is Healthcare Administration. Healthcare Administrators plan, direct, and coordinate health and medical services in many organizations. They are responsible for administering the financials, managing personnel, maintaining boards, analyzing facility activities, and planning programs (11-9111.00 - Medical and Health Services Managers, n.d.). Depending on specific occupation acquired, several different softwares can be learned. Skills such as administration, customer service, human resources, and accounting are imperative for this career as interacting with people is the majority of this job. I started off volunteering in the department of patient escort services and then I was transferred into the emergency room. For patient escort, I mainly discharge patients and provide assistance to hospital visitors. For the emergency room, I bring patients who come into the emergency room to the imaging department, where they can take their X-rays, ultrasound, or CAT scans. I got the opportunity to interact with physician assistants and other health professionals. In addition to volunteering, I have also shadowed a physician assistant at Children’s Hospital. After interacting with physician assistant and learn more about the career, I soon came to realize that the physician assistant is not the career I want to pursue and I am more interested in the field of pharmacy. When I was younger, I always imagined having a job helping others in the medical profession. My favorite quote is by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which states," The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." This is perfect to me because I hope to live my life this way. I would always think about what my future would look like, because I always try to plan ahead. High school was the time in my life when I started to process what I really wanted to do as my future career. From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career.
