Media is the main means of mass communications, such as televisions (TVs), radio, magazines and newspapers, which reach the wide majority of a population. It offers entertainment, culture, news, sports and education, and celebrities are regarded by young people as heroes and idols. The media is an important and often inescapable part of our lives and has much to teach but some of what it teaches may not be what we want our youth to learn. Our society is constantly bombarded with commercials whose purpose is to sway our buying habits, and with shows, movies and magazines which influence what we wear, like, and think. These messages are interpreted differently by young people and have a direct impact on their increase use of illegal, and sometimes prescribed, drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. There is a direct relation between the ways celebrities are viewed as having the perfect lifestyle and how teenagers believe illegal substances would enhance their life in the same way. The different sources of media also aid in this portrayal. Reality TV shows promote the use and abuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco by celebrities and regular people who get their one minute chance in the limelight.
In today’s society, the media has many beneficial along with undesirable influences that determine the behavior of many teens and young adults. If we do not have internet and TV at home we are certain to make our children feel like outcasts in society for they are unable to join in the conversation with their peers. When they are at their friends’ house, we are unable to control what they watch and hear. Instead, as a society, we must deviate from this obsession with celebrities and their addictions. Parents need to maintain an open line of communication with their children and teens and ensure that they are aware that what they see on TV is for entertainment purposes and should not be replicated for there will be real life consequences. Teenagers are more likely to abstain from drugs, alcohol and tobacco if they are engaged with other activities such as sports, outdoor activities, and a good communication relationship with their parents.
In general, the effects of television and drugs cannot be compared as equivalents; nevertheless, their study is worth of consideration. They are still two mysteries to be solved: why people spend so many hours in front of a TV set instead of doing something proactive and why people seeks refuge in drugs. We may not know all of the answers but we know all the of questions. While we walk towards the light hoping to find the answers to these mysteries, there are still many things to be done. In the meanwhile, one thing must remain in our minds: we will still face many obstacles together as society, with or without television and drugs.
Everyday people are peer pressured and influenced into multiple unhealthy behaviors. Acts such smoking, alcoholism, and unprotected intercourse are frequent issues in any lifestyle. Friends, family, and especially the media have a way of twisting a person’s mindset into believing these unhealthy choices are safe. Currently, the most reoccurring phenomenon is issues with drugs. More often than not, there are reports on people misusing and abusing drugs, particularly celebrities and athletes.
Have you ever met someone who acted just as teens are stereotyped? Not many people have because they do not exist. Real teens are poorly portrayed in the media and are the complete opposite of their stereotypes. Books and TV shows make teens out to be wild or crazy, irresponsible and out of control. One hardly ever hears about teen-heroes. Instead, newspapers and magazines are plastered with stories of teens and crime. And while looking at commercial billboards and other related media, the regular teen seems to be sex-crazed and image-obsessed.
In a modern age where the media retains a strong influence on the general population, many youths across the globe are feeling the effects of being misrepresented by media. This article talks about the effects of media exposure on adolescents and the violence that is can bring. Using the social conflict theory it portrays the media as having a harmful impression on today’s children. The article shows how crime statistics have decreased the arrests for violent crimes committed by youth offenders has not (Fowler, 2002). The article also shows how the APA is teaming up with federal programs to help resolve these harmful effects that the media is portraying. The article shows that media is responsible for the social conflict that these adolescents are dealing with. The APA and other organizations along with the federal government are combating this problem from every angle (Fowler, 2002). While the article does speak of some statistics it may be inflating them by not including a breakdown of what violent crimes are being committed.
Nowadays, a standard stage of growing up is feeling the stress of one’s body image due to the growing pressure from society and media. In 2012 there was a survey that said “A full 50 percent of children from 8 to 10 years old report being ‘unhappy’ with their bodies” (ProQuest Staff). The media, including television programming, cartoons, film, the news, as well as literature and magazines, is a very powerful and pervasive medium for expression. It can reach a large number of people and convey ideas, cultural norms, stereotypic roles, power relationships, ethics, and values. Through these messages, the mass media may have a strong influence on individual behavior, views, and values, as well as in shaping national character and culture. Although there is a great potential for the media to have a positive and affirming effect on the public and society at large, there may be important negative consequences when the messages conveyed are harmful, destructive, or violent.

Teenagers have seen most of the popular R-rated movies, and many had seen a copy of Playboy or Playgirl by the time they hit 16 years of age. The media impact on youth smoking and many of this information come in the structure of paid advertising from tobacco companies which advertise their cigarette branding. The tobacco companies have placed their products in media as smoking cigarettes still exists in movies, television shows and music media or there may be unpaid use of cigarettes in these entertainment platforms. Regulation of the tobacco and alcohol industries is mandatory, to warn users of their products potential risk. Advertisers should be required to do the same. Advertisers could develop a comprehensive education program, as the tobacco industry has developed, directed toward informing parents of the potential risks of allowing children to view media content. Our educators, professionals, and culture at large should demand regulation of media content. Until this happens turn it off, unplug it, spend time with our children.
As the article “Link between Alcohol Marketing and Youth Drinking Grows Stronger” stated that exposure to alcohol through the media equals to higher rates of drinking among teenagers (Vimont, 2017). This is a serious issue due to the negative consequences. Alcohol plays a big past in today’s society. For example, I have seen many different commercials advertising liquor. It seems as if society makes sit acceptable and to one point encourage drinking as part of someone’s social life.
Social Scientists say that the average American watches too much television and plays too many video games. I would agree with this, because in high school that is all I did, but not so much for me anymore. Back when I was in high school that is all I did. Watch television, play Nintendo, hang out with my friends. However, now that I am in college, I have had to change my ways. It helps a lot that I don't have either one of those in my dorms.
In order to understand how media can affect society or individuals, it is first necessary to look at different approaches that can be taken to analyze the media. According to the book Media Now, there are two main approaches that are used: the deductive approach and the inductive approach. The deductive approach is when a social scientist first comes up with theories or predictions through systematic observations of the media, and then uses the results of their research to support the theory or prove it false. An inductive approach is slightly opposite because this method looks first at peoples interactions with media and with each other, and then creates theories from the real-life situational research. The inductive approach tends to be used more frequently because its theories are based off real instances. Another difference in the ways to approach researching the effects of media is how some social scientists are interested in quantitative information while others are more interested in qualitative information. Quantitative information is when the desired results are as many as possible, while qualitative information is when the desired results are made up of the best, most useful information. All of these approaches and methods of research influence how social scientists determine the ways that media effects society and individuals. The kinds of studies done by these social scientists create detailed profiles of media and its content, and identify trends overtime. For example, one study found that exposure to alcohol advertising and television programming has been shown to be associated with positive beliefs about drinking and alcohol consumption (Austin 2).
