Alcohol is a relevant issue to the social work field for various reasons. As social workers serving clients with alcohol problems is one of the hardest things, just for the simple fact that alcohol is legal. Alcohol issue is relevant in this field, because clients are most of the time in a pre-contemplation stage when discussing any alcohol used due to its legalization. Social workers are challenged on a daily basis with the statement from clients, “Alcohol is not drug, because it is legal.” Social workers then have to help the client understand that alcohol is a very dangerous drug, even if it is legal. As the article “Link between Alcohol Marketing and Youth Drinking Grows Stronger” stated that exposure to alcohol through the media equals to higher rates of drinking among teenagers (Vimont, 2017). This is a serious issue due to the negative consequences. Alcohol plays a big past in today’s society. For example, I have seen many different commercials advertising liquor. It seems as if society makes sit acceptable and to one point encourage drinking as part of someone’s social life. Many teenagers perceived this as if its also acceptable for them to drink even thought they are not 21 years old. Furthermore, society fails to recognize the major influence that they have on teenagers. However, drinking is huge problem and causes many deaths. According to the article, “Link between Alcohol Marketing and Youth Drinking Grows Stronger” alcohol related death among teenagers on a yearly basis is approximately 4,300. Is society continues to encourage drinking through the media and other sources this number would continue to increase.
