Based on the poem "Introduction to Poetry", is written by Collins, the author talks about how to read poetry, and what the author wants the reader should do, do not during reading poetry. The readers can read slowly or quickly learn poetry by their critical thinking. In the first four lines of this poem, the author wants to send to the readers as the first step of reading poetry.
The readers should choose carefully a poem to expand meaning of that poem. Collins indicates, "hold it until the light like a color slide", which means the readers need to expand their imagination to skim whole pictures in the poem after choosing a poem. Indeed, "A color slide" symbolizes events that the readers can image. "Press one ear" is a metaphor picture of misunderstanding the meaning or a mistake in the wording of the verse. "Walking in rooms of poems" proves for this though. The word "walk" means an unhurried action, and "the poem's room" stands for a deep focusing on analyzing the poem. "Feel the walls for a light switch," makes the readers have emotions into the poem. Sometimes the readers do not understand this metaphor at some moments of the poem. Then, "light switch" will be the light that inspires to the readers. In addition, "Them" here means his students. Collins wants his students to go through how his students, as the readers, move into how do they can get in and how they can recognize the meaning of the poem. Collins wants the readers feel fun and enjoy skimming over and exploring the sound or the content of the poem by saying "I want them to waterski across the surface of a poem". "Waving at the author's name on the shore" indicates an image of friendly relationship between the readers and the author.
