What this writer found truly exceptional about McMinn’s approach was the wisdom shared in helping Christian counselor become more successful in the therapy process. The challenges that McMinn shared in chapter one could be difficult for a Christian counselor if they don’t embrace this new frontier “as McMinn’s would call it” of intradisciplinary integration. The first of the six challenges is moving from two areas of competence to three. Dr. Gration shared her viewpoint that psychology and theology is not sufficient enough for interdisciplinary integration. So moving from those two and adding a third, which is Christian beliefs is necessary to keep “counselors grounded in the midst of a profession easily swayed by new theories, fads, and sensationalistic claims” (McMinn,

2011, 9). The next challenge is blurred personal-professional distinctions. In most professional-ethics codes there is a clear difference between the professional life of the counselor and the personal life of the counselor. McMinn debates the distinction by articulating that professionalization of counseling is not only successful with therapeutic techniques, but it also matures out of the person’s inner life. In this sense, counseling is both. In the next challenge it explains how professional and personal life can co-exist to prepare the counselor for interdisciplinary integration. McMinn called this expanded definitions of training, both professional and personal training is needed.
A competent counselor only requires professional training, but the Christian counselor would need that as well as “The Spirit of the Disciplines” to have the substance of spiritually sensitive counseling that goes deeper than technique (McMinn, 2011, 15). Confronting dominant views of Mental health is another challenge, meaning that there are other views and conversations on the methods used by Christian counseling. McMinn states that “we can bend Christian assumptions to conform to existing techniques, but at some point our belief system snaps, and we are lift with only theistic scraps saturated by artistic definitions of mental health” (McMinn, 2011, 17). Establishing a scientific base is also a challenge for Christian counselors. In order for the Christian counseling theory can be accurately understood among secular professionals must use the language of science that are most common among these professions. In the first chapter of Psychology in Christian Perspective by Harold W. Faw the author talks about psychology as a subject, the different aspects of the subject and how psychology fits into the Christian world. Faw begins the chapter by describing what others think psychology and his views on psychology as well. He describes that “psychology can be described as a systematic attempt to understand human behavior and conscious experience” (Faw, 1995, p. 12). He then goes on to describe the many different types of specialties of psychology which include, neurobiological, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and psychoanalytic. The start of this article focuses on a Christian client named George who is plagued with feelings of worthlessness, depression, low self-esteem, and suicide. His mother had also battled depression, and his father had an abusive relationship with alcohol, which caused his father to have verbally and physically abusive altercations with George and his mother. The abusive experiences that George was exposed to as a child paved the way for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as an adult (Garzon, 2005). With all of these factors present in this client’s life, a treatment plan was created that involved scripture interventions. The author made sure to touch on the fact that every client is unique in the hopes that counselors would be aware that one type of scripture intervention might work for one client and not work for another. The article highlights three guiding values when considering these types of interventions; “respect for the client’s autonomy/freedom, sensitivity to and empathy for the client’s religious and spiritual beliefs, and flexibility and responsiveness to the client’s religious and spiritual beliefs.”(Garzon, 2005). ...
As you read through the chapters you can clearly see that there are times when overlapping ideas and thoughts about human-beings can be seen in theology and psychology. Helping readers become more aware and to understand that their presumptions are the basis to these issues and that our understanding between the relationship between psychology and Christianity are based on the assumptions. After reading this book it can be easily seen it is geared more toward students of psychology and other behavioral sciences as well as pastors that may be interested in the integration. Some questions that have arose after reading through this book is as a Christian Counselor, what are the ethical concerns that one may have in using the models of integration? This is David Entwistle 2nd edition book published in 2010 by Wipf and Stock in Oregon. Entwistle is a Christian and a licensed psychologist; he has affiliations with Molone University in Canton, Ohio serving as chair of the Psychology Department and has taught courses related to his licensed field. This book clearly is not written for any newcomers to religion. However, it was written for those interested in the integration of science and religion. The authors’ purpose for writing this book was to define the relationship between psychology and theology. There are three specific areas this book touched upon to help readers’ better approach psychology and Christianity in a personal and more professional manner: The context of philosophical issues and worldview, to help the readers become aware of assumptions or beliefs- making the reader a more critical evaluators, and to introduce and familiarize the reader with five paradigms for integrating psychology and theology.
This paper will be reviewing the book “Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity: an introduction to worldview issues, philosophical foundations and models of integration, by David N. Entwistle. As the title states, this book discusses how to integrate psychology and theology. It also dives into to why it is so important to be able to integrate the two. Entwistle explains that just because the two are different does not mean they should be separated and that we have to use both our worldviews. “Weaving together perspectives from psychology and Christian theology can help us understand and appreciate humanity more fully than we could either perspective alone.” (p.3)
“Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity” (2010) is about the purposeful integration of psychology and Christianity. Entwistle, discusses the integration of scripture and nature, holding to historic orthodox Christianity that “Scripture and the natural world have their origins in God’s creativity and revelation” (Entwistle, 2010, p. 136). Theology clarifies the Word of God (Bible), and Psychology corresponds with the works of God. A working definition of integration is offered,

In addition to analyzing the possible connection between psychology and theology, Entwisle discusses the consideration of integrating Christian faith with the practice of psychology. “Christian understandings of person-hood, the purpose of human life, our need for God, and the ethical teachings of Christian faith are integral to psychology, not merely parallel to it” (p. 199). Entwistle’s viewpoint on this matter is clearly stated. He believes that it is necessary for theology and psychology to be integrated in order to fully understand human nature.

However, it does not matter how strong a person’s faith is or how weak a person faith is, everyone in Christian counseling starts off the same. It is a process how a person develops overtime. My mother is a school counselor and is working on her Ph.D in psychology and counseling, my father is a marriage and drug rehabilitation counselor, and was a minister in his younger years. I agree heavily with the concerns as well as the conclusion with the article. It is important to not trust all clergymen with every problem, some are best left to psychiatrists, and many clergymen are not qualified to help. They may even make the problem worse. But it is also very important to recognize that no two psychiatric cases are the same, each require unique approaches. And, regardless of your opinion on religion, it can be a useful as a tool to help change people’s lives, as the head of a state hospital said, “I’d appoint a horse-doctor to the staff if I thought he might do my patients any good!”
