The McComb School District is a community school district committed to providing the best possible education to all students who live within the McComb community. Our future depends upon providing the best possible education to all of the children we serve. The board is committed to high levels of achievement for all students in the district. In the context of widespread concerns about the district’s educational performance, Superintendent Cederick L. Ellis, Sr. and the McComb School District Board of Trustees, completed a four-year strategic plan to redesign and transform McComb schools. The schools will be transformed with a cutting edge non-traditional approach to public schooling geared toward students acquiring the knowledge, skills, and competence needed to successfully complete the school experience “Next-Generation Ready.” The strategic plan, envisioning public education for our students over the next four years encompasses the five (5) following focus …show more content…

The school board goal is working to create an educational system where student success is inevitable and all students are cultivated to become fierce competitors in a global society. Collectively, they have the power to transform educational opportunities for our children. If not us, then who? If not now, then when? They must respond to the needs of the next generation of learners; giving them a fair chance to succeed, to compete, and to become world-class competitors. Our children deserve the best; we must stop settling for less than world-class. I feel that the board played a very important part in every child educational in there district. They must do there best to help that child to achieve their goal in society. Thornton Fractional South High School represents a diverse school building in the South Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. We consist of a traditional 9th through 12th grade building with the exception of busing students to the District 215 Tech Center for vocational classes. We share these resources with our sister school TF North. Although we consistently outperform TFN, we are behind the state averages on both the ACT and the PSAE. On the ACT, we are below the state average on the composite score as well as on all three recorded sub-categories. We were closest to the state average in Science and the furthest in Reading. As for the PSAE test to measure those students meeting and exceeding standards, we are again behind the state average. TFS averaged 40.5% of students tested to meet or exceed standards. Meanwhile, the State of Illinois average was 53%. Currently, we are on the Academic Watch Status year 2. We were unable to meet the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) or the Safe Harbor Target Goal for Reading and Mathematics which are the two target areas. Our goal as a school is to reach the AYP and attempt to reach and exceed the state averages on the ACT and PSAE.

Local school boards must know and completely understand the basis of legal responsibilities and restrictions. These responsibilities and restriction include overseeing the operation of local public schools. The school board is held accountable for creation of policies, rules and regulations that provides guidance for the administration and operation of schools. The school board is perceived as a corporate body, which means an individual member of the board do not have more power than the overall power that is given to the board by the legislature. Therefore, individual school board members do not have the freedom to formulate policy, or act self-sufficiently of the school board as a whole. School board members are known to be public school officers, and are given powers by the legislature that help them fulfill their responsibilities.
The role of school boards “is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff.” Although this is their main purpose, they also have to balance a district budget, create a district-yearly calendar, negotiate contract, construction, and approve district curriculum. (Stover 1) Although it might seem harsh to argue with school boards even though they do a lot, it is their job. They were appointed to lead and better the community, guide our children. If they are not mentally ready to be a leader, then why run for a school board member, the focus should be on the children, how to better education for them, and how to make sure they get the most out of every day coming to school.
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. “Traditionally, the low- performing label has been applied with a broad brush to “bad” schools having a wide range of perceived deficiencies: low academic expectations and achievement, high dropout rates, lack of discipline, inadequate facilities, and demoralized staff” (Lashway, 2003). The federal government with the indoctrination of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) provided an official definition of chronically low performing schools. The definition consist of schools that have not met their Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading and math over a four year period. The newly defined classification of a chronically low performing school would demonstrate low academic achievement in reading and math with no growth on annually administered state assessment over a period of three years. The school would also fail to show ability to gauge its needs, plan, develop, implement, and monitor the necessary strategies that will improve student achievement. The measure of growth in this area relies upon the results of a district lead audit. This would utilize classroom observations, walk-throughs, interviews of all stakeholders (students, parents, staff, and community), and review of data submitted by the school around the areas of attendance, suspensions, retentions, and dropouts.
Over the course of this class we were required to read, “Foundations of Education”. Which has shed light on the knowledge of how schools are ran, and some of the obstacles that are presented in the midst of daily operations. Education is an integral part of society, school helps children learn social norms as well as teach them how to be successful adults. The school systems in United States, however are failing their students. In the world as a whole, the United States is quickly falling behind other countries in important math and reading scores. The United States ranked thirtieth in math on a global scale and twentieth in literacy. This is even more true in more urban, lower socio-economic areas in the United States. These schools have lower test scores and high dropout rates. In Trenton Central High School West, there was an 83% proficiency in literacy and only 49% of the students were proficient in math. Many of these students come from minority backgrounds and are often from low income families. There are many issues surrounding these urban schools. There is a severe lack of proper funding in these districts, and much of the money they do receive is sanctioned for non-crucial things. Schools also need a certain level of individualization with their students, and in many urban classes, this simply does not happen. While there are many factors affecting the low performance of urban schools, the lack of proper funding and distribution of funds, the cultural divide between teachers and students in urban districts, along with the lack of individualization in urban classrooms are crucial reasons to explain the poor performance in these districts. Through a process of teacher lead budget committees and further teacher education, urban schools can be transformed and be better equipped to prepare their students for the global stage.
This is to ensure that the changes that are occurring within education; I am helping to shape and foster. Therefore, as an educational leader I strive to the notion that my most important constituents are my teachers because they will shape the thoughts and opinions of my students and larger community. With that in mind, I want to create a school environment that fosters high-quality curriculum, cutting edge instruction, and 21st century problem solving and equipment learning. Therefore, I want a school that students, teachers, and the larger community would be proud to send their children. Moreover, the reason that I want to lead is because I understand the power that good educational administrators can have on shaping a school, a community, and maybe even a nation. Likewise, for students competing in a 21st century world; they are going to need to have schools that are innovation centers which fosters creativity, problem- solving, and comprehension. Therefore, I believe that it is my job as an educator to ensure that our students are discovering knowledge for themselves, and developing passions that will push them into the future. Moreover, my experience on our school’s principal advisory committee and school improvement council have given me the experience needed to drive through the reforms that we need to within our school. When all stakeholders share similar core values and agree on the aims of education, reform efforts stand a better chance for success. Knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and citizenship are core values found at the heart of my beliefs for education. I also believe it is the aim of education to prepare students as contributing members of society. In schools where core values and education aims are revisited due to reform implementation, strategies are identified along with a plan for implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The federal government, state, districts, school leadership, teachers, students and parents all have significant responsibilities to make reform efforts a success.
