Baylor Kirkland Mrs. Lawson English 10 8 May 2024 Mayella Ewell vs Tom Robenson Mayella Ewell is at fault for sending an innocent man to prison and leading him to his death. Mayella and Tom Robenson are from a small, tight-knit community in Alabama. In the South, many hardships and racism took place. Mayella was left alone almost every day as her family worked. One day she felt lonely and decided to take advantage of Tom Robensen by sending her family to go get ice cream and asking him for help. When Tom Robenson realized there was no work to be done, she would not let him leave. Mayella later accused him of rape and won the trial. When Tom Robenson realized that there was no work to be done, he tried to leave, but Mayella would not let him. After Mayella accused him of rape, Atticus had this to say to the jury, "She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterward.” Mayella did not care that what she was doing was wrong when she thought no one would know, but when her family came home she made up a lie so that she wouldn't be judged throughout the community. Mayella also revealed that she was at fault because of how she acted later in the story. Mayella cared more about what her town thought of her than the freedom of an innocent man. Mayella would never be looked at the same in her community if everyone knew that she had tempted a black man, Atticus explained this to the jury by saying, "She has committed no crime, she has merely broken a rigid and time-honored code of our society, a code so severe that whoever breaks it is hounded from our midst as unfit to live with.” Atticus told the jury this so that they would understand why Mayella felt like she had to make up a lie, instead of saying what actually …show more content…

Bob Ewell cared more about himself than he did raising his children, and that could have been why Mayella lied about Tom Robenson raping her. Atticuse tells his sister about the Ewell family by saying, ‘It’s certainly bad, but when a man spends his relief checks on green whiskey his children have a way of crying from hunger pains” He says this proves that it is a well known fact that Bob Ewell is a bad dad, and he has been a bad dad for a long time. Although Mayella might not have had the best dad or family growing up, she is still responsible for her actions. Her father didn't invite Tom Robenson
