Maus I by Art Speigleman presents the story of Vladeck's life before and during the beginning of the Holocaust. Vladeck begins the story by explaining how he met Anja, falls in love, and gets married to her, despite effort from his past girlfriend to break them up. Vladeck gets drafted into the war and is taken to a prison camp where he later gets out to find his way home to Anja. Next, the Germans began to separate families and require them to use food coupons. This leads Vladeck to begin participating in illegal trading. Vladeck moves his family into bunkers, and they give their son away only to find out he is killed. Later they end up getting separated from Anja's parents and Vladeck continues to try and find food and safe places for him and Anja to stay. Throughout this book, the theme the author is presenting is there is an immeasurable will to survive. Throughout this book, Vladeck shows a lot of resilience and loyalty. To begin, near the beginning of the book, Anja gives birth to her first son and she begins to fall into a depressive state. She falls apart and says to Vladeck, “I just don't want to live anymore” (33). This causes Vladeck to take her to a quarantine, he provides unlimited comfort for her and is strong for her when she needs him. This demonstrates Vladeck's loyalty and resilience because he was able to provide her support and anything else she needed, and he was able to pull her out of that state and bring her happiness. In addition, later in the book, Vladeck gets drafted in the war and then sent to a prison camp. While at the prison camp many people began to lose hope, but Vladeck continued to make habits and keep himself healthy so he could go home to his wife and son. He
