for Antonio’s social, moral and mental development through Antonio blessing Narciso when he was dying. The juvenile protagonist Antonio goes through the social development when he being a priest in a game refused to punish Florence and stand up for him among his fellows. An individual goes through a social development when he comes across the societal norms and traditions and learns to either accept them or defy them.Living in a Christian society with conflicting parental backgrounds, Antonio was exposed to the harsh realities of the society and their ways of judging and discriminating people due to the certain reasons in different categories. He has seen people voicing out different opinions about his spiritual healer Ultima after or before knowing her in person. He himself was subjected to societal ways for the first time when he was being bullied in school for being old fashioned. While playing a game with his fellows where he has to be a priest and punish Florence Antonio once again was put in a contradicting situation by the society. But instead of conforming to the societal norms he decided to infringe them and so he does. This is manifested by Anaya in chapter 18 when in a pastime compelled to be a priest Antonio refuses to punish Florence for not believing in God.He said with an affirmative voice, “I am the priest!...and I have absolved him of his sins”(Anaya 214).The above corroboration clearly demonstrates that Antonio has developed socially all this time and now knows how to interact and react with the society when it forced you to conform to a certain norm.In the case with Florence, although Antonio’s friends expect him to react in a certain way and discipline Florence for not believing in Christian God, he arbitrates to support Florence even being well aware of the bitter consequences of this act. This courage has somehow achieved by him through blessing Narciso at the time of his death. So Antonio goes through social development when he decides to stand in favor of Florence against the societal customs and traditions. The moral maturation of the chief character occurs when he finally understands the righteousness of Ultima and her teachings while trying to save her from Tenorio's wrath.Moral growth teaches a mortal the distinction between right and wrong and that good is always stronger than evil and even the smallest bit of good can stand against all the powers of evil in the world.Throughout the story, Antonio and morality were inseparable. At different points of life and in a different turn of events Antonio tries to seek the difference between right and wrong.Although Ultima was always there to show him the right path and teach him the lessons of morality yet an understanding gain from experience and time has its own value.
Narciso’s death once again arouses the questions of morality in his mind and he itched to hunt for the answers to those questions. But when he saw the vengeance in Tenorio’s eyes and his aggravation for Ultima he decisively recognizes the rectitude of Ultima and her ways to fight evil. The demonstration of this act occurs in chapter 22 when acknowledging the evil intentions of Tenorio, the distinction between right and wrong dawned on Antonio, “For us Ultima personified goodness, and any risk in defense of goodness was right. She was the only person I had ever seen defeat evil where all else had failed”(Anaya 255).This confirmation displays the fact that eventually, Antonio came to learn that sometimes the source of fighting the evil doesn’t matter but the intentions do.And that one must support righteousness at any stake.Antonio goes through moral development by perceiving the goodness and righteousness of Ultima fighting against
evil. The Chicano boy mentally developed during the chaos of Ultima’s death, when he as a man ordered his mother to take his sisters inside.Mental development of a soul happens when it becomes mature enough to perceive problems, to find their solutions and to take correct decisions at the right moment.Being born in a family where he was maternally Luna And paternally Marez, Antonio was always torn between losing innocence and becoming a man.Through the course of the events being displayed in the novel Antonio was never treated as a man by his family. He always does what he was being told to, like a puppet.Either choosing between Marez and Luna, becoming a priest or a cowboy Antonio was consistently listening to his elders like a child. But him blessing Narciso at the time of his death brought several changes in him.He developed a lot from that time. When Ultima’s owl was dying and there was chaos everywhere, Antonio handles the situation like a man and although he was crumbling from inside he acknowledges his responsibility towards his sisters which only a person with mature mentality would do.In Chapter 22 the author proficiently exhibits the maturity of Antonio when even in a sensitive situation he takes care of his sisters.Antonio firmly orders his mother about his sisters saying, “Take them to their room”(Anaya 259).This confirmation demonstrates that ultimately Antonio has learned to deal with the critical situations like a man and now he doesn’t freak out like a child. The difference between the way of dealing the situation of Antonio and his sister speaks volumes of Antonio’s development throughout the whole story.Antonio’s mental development is marked by his ability to realize the sensitivity of the situation and care for his sisters as a man during Ultima’s death. Coming to the end, Rudolpho Anaya’s masterpiece Bless Me, Ultima tremendously presents the story of the maturation of Antonio describing the facts that development and maturity are not measured by age. It’s an attitude built by experience.Antonio’s mental, social and moral growth was initiated with him blessing Narciso at the time of his death. From being a carefree child to a responsible adolescent Antonio suffers a lot during the transformation and ultimately acknowledges that one has to lose something precious in order to gain something priceless. And he has to lose his innocence in order to achieve maturity.
The day after having witnessing Lupito’s death Antonio is curious about what will happen to his soul. Based on what’s said in the bible he wondered whether Lupito’s soul will go to hell, whether god will forgive him and put his soul in purgatory, or would Lupito’s soul be doomed to haunt the river like the Llorona? On the way to church Antonio also asked Ultima what would happen to the souls of the men who killed Lupito, whether God would chose to forgive them. Ultima simply said that it wasn’t their place to question who would be saved, it was only God’s decision.
Malintzin was an indigenous woman of Nahua who, despite all odds, thrived throughout the Spanish conquest of the Americas. The story of Malintzin is beautifully and elegantly portrayed in Camilla Townsend’s novel, Malintzin’s Choices. Townsend discusses the life of Malintzin and debunks the myths associated with the era of conquest, as well as signifies the grandeur manifested within her time period. In determining Malintzin’s unique characteristics which allowed her survive and prosper throughout the conquest of mexico, one must assess the social, political, and psychological feats depicted through Malintzin’s journey. The traits that led to Malintzin to her uttermost success prevailed through: her intelligence, her charm and beauty, her loyalty, and her courage. Thus, the life of Malintzin does, in fact, represent a story that should inspire and exhilarate those who espouse for the ideals of growth and prosperity.

In the novel, Bless me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, a boy goes through many more experiences than any child in the hot summer days in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. He witnesses the deaths of his close friends and family. This boy expresses his emotions and grief through his dreams, only to wake up with fear and confusion in his mind. Antonio’s life is filled with dreams that foreshadow future incidents, as well as influences Antonio’s beliefs of religion and ideas of innocence.
When Antonio first became homeless, an older man tried to steal one of his belongings, which was a simple hot plate. His first instinct was to attack the man and take back his property. While doing so, Antonio thought, “We have almost nothing, and this man wants to take it from us” (43). In addition, he mentions how, “It felt good to hit this man… For a moment, he felt strong and free; fury was a much better drug than self-pity.” (43). When Antonio discusses about the old man and his crimes, he may be alluding to Longoria and what he did to Antonio’s family. The man who tried to take away part of Antonio’s possessions is referring to Longoria and how he took away Antonio’s family. The act of beating the old man refers Antonio’s eventual act of revenge against Longoria and the satisfaction he experiences afterwards. Both acts demonstrate Antonio’s willingness to sacrifice and harm other in certain scenarios where it is necessary. The significant difference between Longoria and Antonio is the intention behind their actions. Longoria killed hundreds in cold blood for his own selfish desires and beliefs, while Antonio only harmed a total of two people to get revenge and to enforce justice in the only way he could. As mentioned before, Longoria’s actions are evil because he commits them for selfish reasons and without remorse. In contrast, Antonio’s actions are seen as necessary evils. A necessary evil is defined as an act of evil (as perceived by society) that is committed in a certain scenario where it follows a utilitarian approach; an approach in which the action does more good than harm. When Antonio beat up the old man, he was merely protecting his belongings and enforcing the law. More importantly, when Antonio killed Longoria, it was for his wife, his son, and the hundreds of other innocent lives that Longoria had claimed; Antonio did an act of
Throughout time, stories have been passed down from generation to generation in order to make sense of our world and to share that understanding with others. “Los tres hermanos (The Three Brothers)” and “El indito de las cien vacas (The Indian and the Hundred Cows)” are two Tales of the Hispanic Southwest that I feel the reader could truly relate to in terms of the important moral lessons that were meant to be taught, inferred and understood. The lesson in “Los tres hermanos (The Three Brothers)” involves understanding that the characters involved failed to reflect on the needs of the thirsty, hungry and poor, the lonely, as well as the elderly and are ultimately fairly served by means of moral ruin, death, and worst of all, eternal damnation, while “El indito de las cien vacas (The Indian and the Hundred Cows)” in due course, involves the notion that God helps those who help themselves.
Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima is a magical-realism novel about Antonio, a young boy at the mere age of six turning seven, realizing the many cruelties the world has to offer. As he matures, Antonio is conflicted while trying to choose between the career expectations from his two divergent families and attempting to figure out a true religion. Anaya depicts hidden messages to help the reader comprehend a perceptive insight of Antonio’s inner schism through symbolism.
As you read you can picture his settings and characters. For the purpose of this book review, the reader will discuss how a migrant community in search of the “American Dream” encounters the “American Nightmare” as described by Tomás Rivera in his novel, “ …And the Earth Did Not Devour Him.”

The novel is tragic, with no happy ending but at the same time funny and inspiring. It is full of the victory of the human spirit. The names of Sofi’s first three daughters denote the three major Christian ideals (Hope, Faith and Charity).

In the book “Bless Me Ultima”, by Rudolpho Anaya, there were two families represented, the Marez family and the Lunas family. These two families were very different, but were brought together by the marriage of Gabriel Marez and Maria Lunas. Through the eyes of their son Antonio one may see the comparison of the two. The differentiation of these two families is very clearly noticeable, such as in their personalities, the expression of their religion, and their everyday ways of life.
Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya is a coming of age story about a young boy named Antonio Marez. The novel takes place in New Mexico where Antonio tries to fulfill his parent’s expectations while struggling with religion. Through Antonio, Anaya defies the some of the principles in religion and expresses her interpretation on the system of beliefs. Antonio’s religious confusion suggests that man should be able to choose his own religion and destiny. In the Bless me, Ultima, Antonio experiences conflict in his religious beliefs because of the deaths he witnesses, the new ideas that he learns, and his open-minded mentality.
Family is one of the most important institutions in society. Family influences different aspects of a person’s life, such as their religion, values, morals and behavior. Unfortunately, problems may arise when an individual’s belief system or behavior does not coincide with that of family standards. Consequently, individuals may be forced to repress their emotions or avoid acting in ways that that are not acceptable to the family. In the novel The Rain God, written by Arturo Islas, we are presented with a story about a matriarchal family that deals with various conflicts. One major internal conflict is repression. Throughout the novel the characters act in strange ways and many of the family members have internal “monsters” that represent the past that they are repressing. In his article, “The Historical Imagination in Arturo Islas’s The Rain God and Migrant Souls”, Antonio C. Marquez’s implicitly asserts a true idea that The Rain God is a story about repression. Marquez’s idea can be supported from an analysis of secondary sources and a reading of the primary text.
I agree with all of the article. Everyone either reads or watches televisions or listens to stories because they give entertainment and knowledge. Having companies use storytelling means they know their audience. Personally, I have experienced storytelling as a good memorizing technique. Also, with storytelling helps “rekindle the passion.” However, storytelling can be manipulative; “storytelling is useful when heavy influence is needed.” People will only get to see the perspective of the leader, which can be potentially harmful if there was no one to challenge the leader’s decisions. Stories being told also get exaggerated therefore the companies or the leader using storytelling will
