Matthew McConaughey’s Early Life and Background Matthew McConaughey’s journey began on November 4, 1969, in the small town of Uvalde, Texas. He was the youngest of three sons born to Mary Kathleen (McCabe), a substitute school teacher from New Jersey, and James Donald McConaughey, a Mississippi-born gas station owner who also ran an oil pipe supply business. His heritage is rich and diverse, with Irish, Scottish, German, English, and Swedish roots contributing to his unique persona. Raised in Longview, Texas, McConaughey showed little interest in his father’s oil business, which his two brothers later joined. Instead, he yearned for a change of scenery and adventure. This longing led him to spend a year as an exchange student in Australia, …show more content…
After reading “The Greatest Salesman in the World” by Og Mandino, McConaughey felt inspired to change his major from law to film. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in film production in 1993. Strong independence and a desire to forge his own path characterized McConaughey's early life. This spirit of self-determination has become a hallmark of his career and personal life. His formative years in Texas instilled in him a grounded perspective and a charismatic charm that would later become synonymous with his on-screen presence. His entry into acting was somewhat serendipitous. While in Austin, he met casting director and producer Don Phillips in a hotel bar, who introduced him to director Richard Linklater. Initially, Linklater thought McConaughey was too handsome for the role he had in mind in the film “Dazed and Confused” (1993). However, after growing out his hair and mustache, McConaughey landed the role, which expanded from three scenes to more than 300 lines as Linklater encouraged him to improvise. This chance encounter would launch McConaughey’s acting career, leading to his breakthrough role and setting the stage for his future success in
The movie opened with Tom complaining that he was having trouble making ends meet. His suburbanite friend suggested he apply for a position at UBC. On two occasions at UBC, Tom revealed his lack of conformity. At his interview, the human resources director asked him to write an autobiography and an explanation of his value to UBC. Tom declined to write any revealing information in the in his application. After UBC hired Tom, middle management asked Tom to write a speech for Ralph Hopkins (Frederic March). Middle management wouldn't give Tom's real speech to the president. In turn, Tom bypassed the middle managers and gave his speech to Hopkins. If Tom was the staunch organization man, he wouldn't question the authority of his superiors at UBC.
Arguably the most popular — and certainly the busiest — movie leading man in Hollywood history, John Wayne entered the film business while working as a laborer on the Fox Studios lot during summer vacations from university, which he attended on a football scholarship. He met and was befriended by John Ford, a young director who was beginning to make a name for himself in action films, comedies, and dramas. Wayne was cast in small roles in Ford's late-'20s films, occasionally under the name Duke Morrison. It was Ford who recommended Wayne to director Raoul Walsh for the male lead in the 1930 epic Western The Big Trail, it was a failure at the box office, but the movie showed Wayne's potential as a leading actor. During the next nine years, be busied himself in a multitude of B-Westerns and serials — most notably Shadow of the Eagle in between occasional bit parts in larger features such as Warner Bros.' Baby Face. But it was in action roles that Wayne excelled, exuding a warm and imposing manliness onscreen to which both men and women could respond.
The casting of both Leonardo DiCaprio and fresh-faced Claire Danes influence how the film is viewed. Baz Luhrmann is smart in using young, attractive characters to make the adaptation more appealing to a more adolescent
Jim Carrey’s childhood did not begin as challenging as it developed to be. Born January 17, 1962, to parents Kathleen and Percy Carrey, he was the youngest of four siblings (). The household was teeming with laughter, Jim Carrey’s parents were prone to ill health, and he would make it his exclusive purpose to keep them smiling. Carrey’s father worked as an accountant, the job paid well, and Percy supported the family for most of Carrey’s young life, but His father lost his job. Forcing the family into some tight situations, the laughter stopped. Carrey, his elder siblings, and his parents became homeless, and to provide themselves with shelter; began working as Caretakers and Janitors in a factory. Carrey, himself, had an 8-hour night shift,
Glen Gary Glen Ross I thought was interesting. There were many different kinds of characters in this film. The salesmen in this movie are all after the same goal money and power. There is a constant competition between the salesmen to see who can close more deals to earn the top leads. The Glen Gary leads are the best leads and they become the symbol in this movie. They symbolize the greed that is in each one of these salesmen’s eyes. In the movie there are bosses and managers standing in the way of the men achieving their goals. The head boss played by Alec Baldwin has the most power in the company because he is the owner of the company. He is a cocky man who shows off his power.
Sean Connery’s story starts out in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland. He was born on August 25, 1930. He was named after his grandfather, Thomas Sean Connery. His mother, Euphemia McBain, was a simple cleaning lady for many people. His father, Joseph Connery, was a factory worker, and he was also a lorry driver. He also had a younger brother named Neil. His first job was as a milkman. He walked around picking up empty bottles for a little cash. It was not very much, but it was enough to do something with on the weekends. At around twelve years old, he hit a growth spurt and reached his adult height of 6 ft 2 inches. He later joined the navy and got two tattoos. One was for his parents “Mum and Dad”, and the other one was for his commitment to Scotland “Scotland Forever.” He was discharged from the navy because of a duodenal ulcer. H...
He received a good education and lived a normal life. After his father died, he was forced to live in a run-down neighborhood. George Walton Lucas Jr. was born in the sleepy suburbs of Modesto, California on May 14th, 1944. He was the only son out of four children. His parents made a decent living selling office supplies and maintaining a walnut far (Biography.com 1 of 2). Lucas was a somewhat difficult child during his adolescent years. He barely made passing grades in school and had a very stubborn personality. Early in his life, Lucas developed a passion for race cars and racing. His early dream was to become a race car driver. But shortly after graduating high school, Lucas experienced a near fatal car crash that left him in the hospital for three whole months (World Biography 1 of 6). This event changed his outlook on life and set him down the path that created the George Lucas we know today. After recovering from the accident Lucas wanted to attend film school but his parents refused to support him on his decision and he instead began studying social sciences at nearby Modesto Junior College (World Biography 1 of 6). There he started to gain a more grounded interest in photography and film. This is interesting because even though Lucas' parents discouraged his artistic side, he still pursued his interests anyway. After a near fatal car accident, one would think that the victim's parents would be more accepting of their child's
The Graduate is a cult classic. Not only was it a movie for the generation of baby-boomers in the Sixties, but it still remains a symbol of the teenagers today that are searching for something and those that are "a little unsure about their future". Benjamin Braddock, a college graduate comes home only to be seduced by his father's business partner's wife. He then falls in love with her daughter, Elaine, which in turn leads to a rollercoaster of events which end up leading to the final scene of Benjamin taking Elaine away after getting married to another man. This film is a classic example of coming of age; Benjamin is boy in the beginning, and a man at the end. Without the direction of Mike Nichols, acting by Dustin Hoffman and great cinematography this film would have been forgotten and ill represented.
“No great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness” – Aristotle. I generally like to start off an essay with a quote that seems to encapsulate the whole feeling or energy of the novel or in this case a biography that seemed to resonate with myself the most. This was quite a different book to read in that I had never read a book about someone written completely by someone else. I found some bits of this book to be quite engaging, but yet other parts seem to fall short, because I am not musically inclined whatsoever and found it to be quite difficult to follow, but the parts that discussed the peculiar parts and bits of Glenn’s life were quite riveting to read. Glenn’s upbringing seemed to be different from the “typical” Canadian kid’s life. His parent’s did not seem to work as a team that is needed in raising a child. In this essay I will be discussing about how both Glenn’s mother and father played a very large part, but in very different ways. Both parents had polar opposite parenting styles and Glenn responded very differently to them and he also formed unique attachment styles to each of his parents. “Family Stages of Development” also is something that I think can be discussed in this essay and seems to go hand and hand with attachment styles and parenting styles. Glenn’s upbringing is something I think is very unique and very unlike any other kids his own age. A lot of parents especially in that day and age expected their sons to play sports especially hockey and their daughters would maybe be the musically inclined ones. This is a bit like nature vs. nurture and in Glenn’s situation it seemed to be very much dominated by the nurture side of things. I think that a person’s upbringing is very much dominated...

My perseverance has prepared me for a career in medicine. The path towards becoming a physician can be long and challenging, necessitating the ability to endure. My ability to bounce back from setbacks and mistakes has solidified throughout my journey. One of the cornerstone experiences of my personal development occurred during high school. My determination led to me my graduating as valedictorian of my class, while balancing three varsity sports and several extracurricular activities. In addition, I worked on weekends to help support my family financially. This persistence resulted in scholarship awards that made higher education a possibility.

This film has showed me that we all should aim high. Gardner started out as a lowly salesman, but after seeing how happy stockbrokers were, he decided to take up that career path. He could’ve stayed as a salesman and live a mediocre life, but he chose instead to put his mon...
