My interest in the Master of Social Work program at Walden University is due to its flexibility and positive history as an online program. With this program, I am able to work full-time as well as being a full-time student. I chose this program, because it is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. This accreditation will enable me to work in various industrial sectors such as government, hospitals, or individual and family services. I am also interested in the Master of Social Work (MSW) program at Walden University, because of its specialized practice in Advanced Clinical Practice, Military Social Work, Social Work in Health Care, and Social Work with Children and Families. I want to gain skills, knowledge base, and perspective to pursue further studies in Advanced Clinical Practice with a focus on crisis and trauma intervention. I am particularly interested in working with Dawn Higgins, PhD because of her expertise in bereavement counseling and strategies for children, trauma, and grief. I feel that my goals in graduate school closely align with her field of expertise. I hope to be able to assist individuals in facilitating self-discovery, healing, positive change, recognizing and dealing with obstacles to improve their quality of life. I believe everything I hope to accomplish as a graduate student can be realized at this university. I look forward to the courses that will give me the tools and teach me how to be an effective leader in my community. I will be an asset to Walden University, because I plan to take full advantage of everything this program has to offer. I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
The Masters degree of Social Work (MSW) is a degree that defines who you are and where you are going career-wise. If you are getting a Masters Degree in social work you are most likely going into the field of social work. This deems the question of why I want to go into the specific field of social work. A main reason for me to go into the field of social work is that social work fits my set of values moreso than any other field I am qualified for. Social work is a profession inherently about helping people improve their lives. That kind of work is noble and something I would like to do for the rest of my life. I have always wanted to do things and have a career that would help people and empower their lives. I believe helping people is the only way I can have a clear conscience and sleep well at night. My personal values center around helping people but also about helping people help themselves and improve their own lives. I do not want to treat people who utilize social work services as charity cases or as victims. That is not fair to those people and strips them of their humanity. I hope I can utilize my career as a social work to do as much good as possible in the United States and in the world.
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as a part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social
The writings of advocates of EBP demonstrate that a shift is taking place in the social work field towards a more integrated approach where “social work is an applied, empirically grounded social and cultural science aiming at both causal explanation and interpretive understanding” (Otto & Zeigler, 2008, p. 273). Talking about the limits of RCTs they suggest that “Typically, the experimental design is not able to control for the effects of worker-client dynamics and client characteristics that are not clearly defined, understood or measurable” (Cnaan & Dichter, 2008 p. 281). They go on to say: that there is a need for some sort of feedback process where the fit between the practice needs and the effectiveness of the intervention are actually studied. However it is all too common for social work practice and research to be carried out ‘in silo’ form “where the EBP processes are followed up, evaluated, and connected too rarely” (Cnaan & Dichter, 2008 p. 289).
I come to Fordham University with expectations of completing my Masters of Art degree in Social Service. As a single parent, I have faced many challenges raising my special needs child. The MSW degree along with my bachelors in psychology gives me a great opportunity to build my career as a social worker who will strive to act as a leader and empower others to help those in need. When I have gained efficient experience and expertise in my role as a social worker, I want to educate others on child welfare and family violence. Sharing knowledge and educating is a boundless way to make an impact and promote resilience within the
Identify and explain the three major sources of conflict and misinterpretations in social work practice: culture-bound values, class bound values, and language variables.
...rs. I have completed a minor in philosophy, with a strong emphasis on health care and medical ethics. I plan to carry out the best possible ethical behavior to protect the clients and staff at these social welfare institutions; my goal is to make a difference in these patients’ lives. I am seeking an MSW at the Kent School of Social Work for the purpose of gaining education, experience, and required credentials in order to prepare me in working with clients with disabilities and their families. I routinely go to workshops and continue my education outside of required classes, as this effort contributes to my wealth of knowledge surrounding geriatric social work and the duties that the profession requires. I am consumed with excitement and eagerness to begin the transition from student to professional, and I appreciate your consideration to help me reach my goal.
This peer-reviewed article offers an explanation of the cultural climate of social work advocacy as influenced by technology. According to Baker and Hodgkin (2014), the use of information and communication technology has caused changes in communication patterns and social exchanges. There is an emphasis on moving away from hesitancy in the use and implementation of innovation in order to social work advocacy to evolve in a paralleling manner to society. Bent-Goodley, T. B. (2015). Important of advancing one social work: NASW 60 years later.
Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.
I assume it is possible to use both macro and micro approaches in clinical social work practice. At the agency where I used to work, we assess assessment, diagnosis, and treat individuals with severe mental illness or co-occurring, and other psychological and emotional problems. At the same time, the program assists homeless individuals find a home. Most of the time the case manager goes out in the field or advocates for the homeless populations. In the same program, we had public relations that assess people who want to join the workforce or go back to school.
My life experience has prepared me to pursue a Master Degree in Social Work. Currently, I am an intern at Eggleston Family Services, a foster care and adoption agency. Being an intern at this agency has helped me learn a lot about the Child Welfare System. Some of the tasks assigned to me include case management, monitoring visitation, intake assessments, and outreach. Being a foster family agency social worker has allowed me to witness the devastating effects of child abuse.
Case work is not only the basic practice in professional Social Work but rather, a common practice followed by all. The traditional definition defines case work as “a method of helping individuals through a one-on-on relationship’’. Every individual trained or untrained indulges in case work. The difference is made by theoretical understanding and professional ethics, practices involved in professional case work. Mary Richmond in 1915 explains casework as “the art of doing different things for and with different people by cooperating with them to achieve at one and the same time their own and society' betterment.” Social Case Work can also be defined as “an art in which knowledge of the science of human relations and skill in relationship are used to mobilize capacities in the individual and resources in the community appropriate for better adjustment between the client and all or any part of his total environment”.
I obtained my Masters in Social Work (MSW) degree from India in the year 2006. As with most countries around the world, the emergence of social work in India was from charity aiming to eliminate poverty. Gradually it shifted from philanthropy to rights based approach and then to organized social work. Community organization surfaced as the most central method of social work practice along with practice of casework. Although social work is much more structured in nature now, it still operates along the conventional perspective of social work. Social work is not even recognized as a profession in India. An indicator of an occupation being publicly recognized as a profession is exhibited by
