My life experience has prepared me to pursue a Master Degree in Social Work. Currently, I am an intern at Eggleston Family Services, a foster care and adoption agency. Being an intern at this agency has helped me learn a lot about the Child Welfare System. Some of the tasks assigned to me include case management, monitoring visitation, intake assessments, and outreach. Being a foster family agency social worker has allowed me to witness the devastating effects of child abuse. My experience in the military helps me complete any objective that is assigned to me. It is extremely important that I am empathetic because some client’s I will be working with could be in a state of crisis and emotional distress. Therefore it is essential to offer a caring, understanding and empowering environment for the client. Another quality that equips me for this career is patience. Some of the cases I have worked with are complex, dealing with multiple parties from different agencies. While working at the foster care agency it was difficult to get a hold of the county social worker to have them submit documentation for the minor. Some of the clients may not be talkative, eager, or even capable of asking directly for what they need. Patience will avoid frustrations and exasperation towards clients. In addition to being empathetic and patient, it is important to be dependable. Successful social workers develop rapport with their clients by being genuine, honest, open and dependable. Clients seek social workers advice and guidance in personal, legal, and other matters. It is important for the client to trust me so my opinion is taken into consideration. The next quality I have is persistence. This year I was diagnosed with one of the most devastating disease, cancer. I will provide veterans with services that will aid them and enhance their well-being. I will need a Masters in Social Work to work for the Veterans Affair. In the future, I would like to start a non-profit organization that will service veterans in a variety of ways. This organization will be called “No Vet Left Behind.” Our mission will be to provide services such as therapy, substance abuse counseling, employment assistance, benefits support, and housing. To accomplish this goal I will need a source of funding and marketing to sponsor my organization. The university master’s program will allow me to comprehend the different challenges military personnel and their families face while serving in the military. I also have an interest in policy and lobbying. We need veterans to represent other veterans in congress to change the current procedure that makes it so difficult for veterans to obtain benefits. California State University, Los Angeles, School of Social Work is a great fit for my goals because of the reputation the school has as having one of the top social work academic programs in the nation. Since CSULA social work graduate program takes a generalist approach this will allow me to have knowledge about every population social workers
