A master degree clinician should be deemed as a “clinical psychologist” for several reasons. The term clinician is often used to describe someone who provides mental health services, such as assessments, psychotherapy, evaluations, and diagnoses. Masters level clinicians and doctorate level clinicians provide services to people with psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, bipolar, depression, post-traumatic stress disorders, and several others. They also provide services to people with family problems, work place problems, substance abuse, stress, and relationship issues. APA is not responsible for the specific title or wording of any particular position opening, but it is general pattern to refer to master's-level positions as counselors, specialists, and clinicians. (APA, 1978) The APA only adopts those with a doctoral degree as members. Those with a master’s degree in psychology are only associates of the APA. The members help advance, make decisions, and support psychology through being a member of the APA. This leads me to my next point of doctoral training is not necessary for competent provision of health care services. For example there are many practitioners in the health field who do not have their doctoral degree but are prepared at other levels that help patients such as nurses, aides, counselors, physician assistants, and several others. The main difference between master’s level clinicians and doctoral degree psychologists is the emphasis on research and the specific theoretical orientations. Doctoral psychologists practice within the four theoretical orientations which include psychodynamic, humanistic, behavior/cognitive therapy, or family therapy.
