Bullied Hearts Bullying is a serious issue in our nation that can lead to tragedy, such as mass shootings. In the past decade the increase in bullying has sky rocketed and has just become worse and worse. As bullying has become worse so have the tragedies. More mass shootings and school shootings have happened in the past couple of years, which people are correlating to the issue of bullying. Research has shown that bully victim are twice as likely to brig a weapon to school than a non-bullied student. This issue has become a major problem in the United States and we need to find a way to stop it. Mass murders in schools have become a very big problem in our nation over the last couple years. One big one would be the shooting that occurred in 2014 at The University of California Santa Barbra. The shooters name was Elliot Rodgers and he shot and killed six innocent men and women. A lot of people would first say that he had some sort of mental illness. Which he could have had and that could have been a big factor. But that was not the truth behind why he did what he did. As they investigated the situation they came to find another reason behind his heinous crime. In the article “Mass Murders in Schools and Bullying: What We Can Do to Help Stop the Carnage” Ross Ellis says “What has been somewhat restrained as this debate rages on is that, as is the case with so many other mass killers, Rodger may have been a victim of bullying during his adolescence”(Ellis). They are not saying that it is an excuse for his crimes but it could have been avoided. As they looked into his case they believe bullying could have caused some of his mental issues. Even though only a small fraction of bullied kids bring guns to school bullying definitely increases the likelihood. Professors Michael Kimmel and Matthew Mahler of Stony Brook University have shown a significant amount of research for the relationship between mass murders
