No longer is the makeup world considered solely for women. Yes, men have been wearing makeup in the entertainment business, in the drag community as well as around the globe in communities such as korean pop. However, men wearing makeup casually has become an increasingly common and accepted practice in the United States. Not only are there male makeup artists but men who wear makeup themselves. One can search youtube and easily come across men who share their tutorials on their “everyday makeup look.”
Recently CoverGirl signed their first male CoverGirl, social media star James Charles. Charles started his makeup journey on instagram and gained over 400,000 followers in just one year. He currently has over 1.4 million.

Popular youtube star Manny Gutierrez, more well known as Manny MUA, is a male beauty vlogger. He posts content on several social media outlets about all things beauty including tutorials of his makeup looks and reviews of makeup products on Youtube. Gutierrez believes makeup is genderless. He uses his platform to fight the stigma behind male makeup wearers.
Gutierrez has over 2.3 million subscribers on Youtube with over 100 million views and over 3.2 million followers on Instagram so to say his reach is wide would be an understatement.
Maybelline recently appointed Gutierrez as the brand’s newest ambassador making him their first male campaign star.
Tahseen Munshi, a UGA alumnus, is very immersed in the makeup world and watches male makeup gurus on Youtube like Gutierrez and Charles regularly. The biology and psychology grad believes makeup is for everyone.
“Everyone deserves to feel beautiful. Makeup can help promote self- esteem and make someone feel more comfortable with the way they look,” Munshi says.
Still, even with this support, Gutierrez and Charles still receive backlash from those who aren’t accepting of the shift in the beauty

“If somebody doesn’t like me behind the keyboard, oh, well. Everybody has the right to their own opinion. I’ll just continue to do me.”
Munshi feels that men should be able to wear makeup without judgement, but understands that not everyone is ok with it.
“I think that anyone should be free to express themselves in any way they desire. But some people are uncomfortable with it, and that's ok...To me, makeup is makeup. If it looks beautiful, it simply looks beautiful. Regardless of one's gender.”
On the other hand, Madison Pilgrim, a third-year marketing major from Newnan, Ga, knows there are individuals who don’t agree with men wearing makeup but doesn’t believe it’s ok.
“I think that they don't have a right to say whether or not a man can express himself with makeup,” Pilgrim says. “It's not their body, so they shouldn't have any say in what the man wants to do to it.”
Both Munshi and Pilgrim agree that there is still a stigma with men who wear makeup casually, especially with straight
She has successfully “changed the standard of beauty” not only one video at a time but also through her use of various social media outlets and participation from her fans, remix, the help of both her primary and secondary audiences, as well as her determination and dedication to continuing to be an advocate for women, especially women of color within the beauty community both online and
In today’s time if men wore makeup, people would not accept it and even mock it. If men wore makeup in Elizabethan time, it was culturally acceptable and manly . Cosmetics worn at the time of Queen Elizabeth differed dramatically from those we wear today. Makeup was a huge part of Elizabethan time but a total pain to put on. The makeup was very heavy on the face and you had to put on several layers to get a good look. It told your peers how wealthy and even how fashion forward you were. But since people did not understand how to make the makeup properly it became a life and death situation each day that they put the harsh chemicals on their faces (Leed).
All women wish to look their best on their wedding day, prom, or their ten year anniversary, so it is a makeup artist’s job to fulfil this desire. The art of emphasizing one’s most attractive features by highlighting the inner corner of the eye to brighten the eyes, contouring the cheeks to make the cheekbones appear higher and painting on bold lipstick to form perfect, plump lips make the face appear flawless. Some people do not wear makeup everyday, so when they do, their face can appear brightened and awake, therefore they believe they look wonderful. Although many people are confident in their appearance and do not demand makeup to boost their self-esteem, wearing well-applied makeup will always make someone feel
I notice now that young ladies take hours to put on make up to wear just for a few hours. For example, my friend Gabby is always wearing make up every day to make her feel good about her appearance. Sometimes we have to pick her up before our friends and I have to head to the movies, we always have to wait outside for her so she can finish putting on her makeup which most of the time we end up being late for the movie. She wears eye liner, eye shadow, foundation, and mascara and even though she wears all this makeup she feels not good enough. In the “Ugly Truth about Beauty”, Dave Barry claims women have insecurities about the way they look and the mindset of being “not good enough” because of “psychological and societal reasons” such as Barbie, the “multibillion-dollar beauty industry” and supermodels. Although men have different perspective about this.
Some men don’t even consider that the reason women wear makeup is to feel better about themselves. Women spend an average of $15,000 on beauty products and $3,770 goes to mascara alone. (Goldembewski) Women spend so much money, to feel confident, but end still be marked for the choice to do so. In addition to women being marked for their choice of wearing makeup, women are also constantly judged for their physique. Women who don’t have an “ideal” physical appearance, tend to be judged negatively and marked for not having these characteristic. The “ideal” body for a woman in the eyes of society is having a flat stomach and long legs. Those women that do not contain those characteristics are victims of bashing on social media, which leads to insecurity. Women who have the “ideal” body also fall to be victims of being marked on a daily, because they are given unwanted attention for their looks, which can make some women feel uncomfortable. Women are also greatly criticized for their clothing
We as women strive to be as independent and confident in ourselves as possible. Tearing another woman down because of the way she presents herself is wrong. As a person who wears makeup, I would that it is a personal preference. I do not wear makeup to impress a male, although it seems many feminists think
Men are expected to be tough, competitive, and masculine. I feel as if men showing a feminine side has become an even larger issue than women being masculine. In an ever-changing world, men have decided that, I would rather play with makeup than power tools and that is OKAY! I cannot stress this enough. Makeup artist and Youtubers, James Charles and MannyMUA, have really paved the path for men to be masculine in makeup. They can wear “men’s clothes,” and makeup and still feel comfortable in their own bodies, and that is what this is all about. Things like makeup and even your child’s toy choices do not define who they
The majority of women are painted up to hide their imperfections and blemishes but it is rare that one sees a guy trying to mask their flaws with cosmetics. A zit is not going to be the end of the world for a guy but you might as well call it World War “Z” for a chick because she is going to be as dramatic and hostile about it as possible. In “Hope-and History-in a Jar” Kathy Peiss rips apart the beauty industry for making women vain and limiting their potential, saying, “And the act of beautifying,...is really compulsory work, so narcissistic, time-consuming,and absorbing as to limit women’s achievements (Peiss, 61-64).” Perhaps this is why men are not known to typically wear makeup, but the more likely reason is to avoid ridicule for this unusual behavior, or simply just not caring what they look
Furthermore, it is not only limited to products, but services like plastic surgery, and salons are considered part of the beauty industry as well. While the main consumers of the beauty industry are women, men play an increasing role in the beauty industry, because it is becoming less of a taboo to wear cosmetic appliances (The History of the Beauty Industry, 2014). In opposition to women being the main consumer of cosmetics, “38% of men would sacrifice at least a year of their life in exchange for a perfect body – again, a higher proportion than women”(Campbell, 2012, para. 2). In addition, the beauty industry is also one of the most resilient industries, even in the face of the 2008 recession, it fared well (The History of the Beauty Industry, 2014). The need to supply a means of aesthetic enhancement even in situations of economic decline represents the importance of the beauty industry. Furthermore, the degree of growth in the industry is expected to increase astronomically because of an increase in the importance of beauty. In fact, beauty is coming more integrated into a person’s life than ever
...ently, one may act differently as well with a new attitude and confidence. While makeup is concealing the faults in appearance, it is also concealing the faults in character, which is another myth.
I do admit at times, I’ll dress up a little nicer or put on a little more makeup to impress someone but I am completely fine in my own natural skin. It is crazy for me to think that women really do practice beauty as its own religion because it is not as important to
Makeup has transformed the lives of so many individuals and continues to play an important role in the daily routines of many women (and those men who choose to wear makeup). [Pause] The main reason why makeup initially became integrated into the daily lives of many individuals was to help conceal facial features that people were insecure about. Now, as of 2018, makeup has helped many people in terms of their general self-confidence. The stereotype that makeup is used to impress others is as far off as one can get. No individual would put so much time [Pause], effort [Pause], and education [Pause] into a task that is only to impress others. It is nice to present our self-expression to others, but it all reflects how one feels. One can change

Woman use makeup to make them look more beautiful, woman now and back that weren’t happy with their natural beauty so they chose to event or come up with something that would make them beautiful.
