She was one of the first women to refuse to give up her seat on a bus before Rosa Parks. She was 18 years old when she refused to give up her seat for a white man. This is her story. Mary Louise Smith was a colored women who was born in 1937 in the city of Montgomery, Alabama. When she was 18 she refused to give up her seat on a bus to let a white man sit. She did this because she was sitting in the black section of the bus and felt entitled to her seat.
