Marshall Bruce Mathers III, more famously referred to as Eminem or his alter ego: Slim-Shady, is the iconic rap/hip-hop artist who failed the ninth grade three times and quit school to flip burgers at a family restaurant. Mathers doesn’t consider himself as stupid, instead he advises his wide range of listeners to not follow his path. So how does a short order cook become a rapping multimillionaire? Eminem’s early years, his road to glory, the subjects of his songs, and his glorious amount of fans make him one of the most recognized and respected artists in the hip-hop industry as well as the music industry in general.
Mathers had a depressing and abusive childhood, but miraculously, he himself considers it as a great factor in his path to fame. In the song “Never Enough (Featuring 50 Cent & Nate Dogg)” from his fifth studio album, he says how he grew up contributed to his love for music and his fame. “Believe it or not, I thank my mom for how she raised me, in the neighborhood daily, they jumped me and chased me, it only made me what I am today see” (Eminem, “Never Enough”). Mathers grew up rhyming words together at the age of four, and continued all the way through middle school, getting more serious about rap the older he got. Battling schoolmates at lunch made him happy when everything around him seemed to be crumbling. At the age of 17, he was so dedicated and determined to rap; he made his first stage-name for himself, becoming M&M, which would later be spelled “Eminem” (Reece). However, despite his deep determination and effort, he was often discriminated and rejected by most rappers because of his race. In summary, Eminem is one of the best hip-hop/rap artists of all time. He stands next to the infamous N. W. A. and the well-known Tupac in the ranks. Mathers’ albums and singles land him with skyrocketing sales and numerous Grammies and other music awards. Backed up by one of his new 2013 songs titles the same, Eminem truly is a Rap God.

While Eminem portrays himself as being from Detroit, he is actually from Missouri. He moved back and forth between Detroit, Michigan and Kansas City, Missouri for most of his childhood. At the age of seventeen, Eminem started getting serious about wanting to be a rapper, giving himself the nickname M&M (meaning Marshal Mathers) and later decided to change the spelling to Eminem with the second E backwards as part of his trademark. He failed 9th grade 3 times, then dropped out, “School wasn’t for me” (Eminem). An education was the last thing on his mind. After throwing himself into the rap world on many levels, usually being shut down, he kept trying.

Raised as an only child, Dwayne Micheal Carter Jr or more commonly referred to as Lil Wayne, was born September 27th, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Carter’s mother was only 19 years old when he was first born. He was being raised by both his mother and father until his father abandoned them while Dwayne Jr. was only two years old. After being abandoned by his biological father, his mother was forced to take care of him on her own and survive in the crime infested community of Holly grove, New Orleans. Even though he divorced his mother and remarried, his father forced the two live with his own mother and came by to abuse Lil Wayne’s mother on a consistent basis.This situation went on for three years until Lil Wayne’s mother eventually remarried and relocated to a different part of town. Growing up he did very well in school. He was actually enrolled in his school’s gifted program at a point and received top grades. He got into music at a very young age and wrote his first rap song at the age of eight. Lil Wayne had the drive to be the best and successful at his craft since he first began. At the age of nine he was challenging others twice his age and older at rapping. He would consistently go to neighborhood parties or events to rap and most of the time he was better then whatever adult he was going against. As a testament to this, at the age of nine he start receiving attention from one of the two co-founders of his future label, Slim Williams. Both a rapper and an MC, Tupac Shakur was a very famous artist during his short time on Earth. Better known as “Makaveli” or “2pac,” Shakur influenced many young teens and adults his age. 2Pac was born in East Harlem, NY during June of 1971. The name Tupac comes from a revolutionary leader who was killed after leading a revolution against the spanish in the 18th century. Most of the family Tupac was raised around were involved with crimes, drugs, and charge convictions. His first job in the industry as an MC was with a hip-hop group Digital Underground. Along with being an MC for this group, he was also a backup dancer and roadie. He was also featured on the group’s song for a soundtrack to a movie called “Nothing but Trouble.” He went on to record both an EP and full studio album with Digital Underground before leaving to pursue his own solo career. It is so hard to become a rapper. But it is harder to become a Great Rapper. I believe Tupac is a great rapper. Not only a great rapper, but the greatest rapper. Like Snoop Dogg had said, “Tupac was many different things at once. Hardheaded and intellectual, courageous and afraid, revolutionary and….oh yeah, don’t get it f***ed up, gangsta.” To be a great rapper, you must have impact, commercial success, be good at song writing, a lot of performances and live shows and lastly, hella good rapping.
