Influencing Consumer Behavior in a Retail Environment
One of the key elements of marketing is the ability to predict consumer behavior. Marketers understand that consumers behave in predictable ways. In this regard, many businesses use physical design to influence the behavior of their potential consumers. It is important to note that this approach is not limited to physical stores. Online marketers also use the same principles in web design to influence the behavior of consumers. ... of the two channels has created advantages that other players cannot match.
The company can improve its channel strategy to enhance its current performance in one way. The company’s website is too reliant in the physical stores. The website has photos of the physical store ostensibly to help customers to connect with it. This idea seems well founded. However, the target market for any company that operates an online shopping system is not local. It transcends geographical boundaries. The company needs to consider how it can make the online shopping experience authentic and complete for customers who may never visit any of its physical stores. A website makes a company a global player. In this regard, the company needs to expand its channel strategy to take into account an expanded potential market. This shift in strategy will increase the sales the company makes.

This report explores the marketing channel problems that David Jones, a high-end Australian department store chain, is currently experiencing. Since it was founded in 1838, David Jones has expanded to the 35 stores, two warehouse outlets, and the online site that it now operates. After suffering from a substantial decrease in sales and profits, David Jones implemented a Future Strategic Direction Plan in 2012, which saw its successful transformation into an omni-retailer, which consistent increases in the online sales since the new channel’s establishment. Woolworths Holdings Limited offered a takeover bid in 2014 which has been accepted by David Jones under reasons to more adequately compete with international leading retailers, which raises issues of whether this is the best course of action for David Jones. After considering the advantages and disadvantages of alternative solutions, including a merging with Myer and remaining as a self-owned department store chain, it was ultimately deduced that perhaps proceeding with Woolworths takeover would provide David Jones with the most benefits in its current situation in concurrence with their future goals.
Nordstrom retail stores have large hallways, and everything is presented in a very classy manner. The color scheme includes pale yellows, whites, and gold, to provide a more elegant appearance in the store in order to make the shopped feel special. The design is also seen through product organization. Compared to stores like Macy’s, which organize their products based on brand, Nordstrom organizes their products based on lifestyle. Because of this, it is easier for shoppers to find clothes similar to their style as opposed to by brand. In effect, shoppers will purchase more products. This also is a type of experiential retailing, where Nordstrom customers are able to experience the elements of their lifestyle within one section. More so, the product presentation will draw people’s eyes to products, even if they are not looking for it. This gives Nordstrom a competitive advantage in relation to other similar retail stores because it makes their store look more glamorous and high-end. While other stores may focus on value, Nordstrom utilizes the retail positioning strategy to make a customer feel more high-end and
Being a multi-billion dollar retailer comes with its perks. JCPenney’s dominance over catalog merchandising has now extended into the cyber world at www.jcpenney.com. This website is multi-functional and easy to navigate, but how would JCPenney’s new e-commerce site stack up against its toughest competitor, Kohl’s, on the web? The answer may surprise you. This is an intriguing look at how varied retail comparisons can be. While JCPenney is struggling with sales on the retail floor, Kohl’s continues to exceed expectations in their stores. Online though, it is a completely different story.
Once the target market has been identified it is important to develop a marketing strategy. In today's fast paced, information overloaded society; conveying a message about a product seems to be more difficult than ever. The consumer is bombarded with advertising everywhere they look. Today advertising not only exists on television, radio, magazines, and newspapers, it can be found on billboards, park benches, in our mailboxes, on buses, taxis, at sporting events, and on clothing.
Key Issues The growing popularity of online retailing is attracting competition from traditional and online multi-retailers such as Wal-Mart and Amazon, which are gaining considerable market shares in many of the product segments included in the specialty retail sector. Currently, the majority of revenue is generated by store sales, but online sales from the stores’ websites are increasing. With the US dollar getting weaker, international sales from these US based websites are increasing too. This creates a significant positive outlook for the large incumbent players but also acts as a significant barrier of entry for new players.
Because, internet today is enabling web-based suppliers an opportunity to meet a choice of different types of customers (Schoenbachler&Gordon, 2002) and has evolved as a feasible distribution channel for the firms that wish to expand their market penetration (Frazier, 1999; Frazier & Antia, 1995), reduce costs (Payne & Frow, 2004), increase revenues ( Kotler, 2000), spread risks, and strengthen customer loyalty (Kelly, 2002) through its use (Hobmeier, 2001).now most of the hotels are using the multiple channel strategy where they are in partnership more than one sales and distribution channel to serve the same target market and this has grown in the recent years. This is creating higher complexity for the hotel management as the data are coming from different partners. As customers, today are using multiple channels, it is almost certain that the future will remain to contain a mixture of even more complex channels (Balasubramanian , Raghunathan, & Mahajan, 2005). Since now, it is obvious that why hoteliers employing multiple channels including electronic ones, is no different; to maximise customer awareness and market share and reduce costs, this increasingly widespread trend to cooperate with new channels rather than stick to
Sports marketing has made its way directly to the fans. In the past, only the extremely devoted fans would check on their teams online but now, the norm has changed. Now the devoted fans learn new information before anyone else, and even get rewarded for it. In the article “The Passion of the Fan”, by Stewart Feil, fans are being rewarded for posting about their favorite teams on social media. The reason this is possible is because mobile apps have greatly contributed to the way fans follow their teams. In “Sports marketing and technology with the New England Patriots”, by Michael Krigsman, it reveals that fans have the capabilities of sending their favorite teams their input about the team. The most amazing part is their voice is being heard. Tracy Keller reveals how deeply mobile apps have helped fans and teams interact in her article, “The Rise of Mobile in Sports Marketing.” She goes into detail on how fans are closer to their favorite teams through new mobile technology involved in sports. To go along with mobile apps, websites are bringing new life into sports and professional teams. In Greg Johnson’s article, “Big-time backers are trying to breathe new life into high-flying sport of Slamball”, it discusses how Youtube has allowed Slamball to keep its fame, and it is also reviving the sport at the same time. Sports and fans have always been together. Sports marketers have made the interactions between fans and teams closer through social media, websites, and mobile technology.
In addition to the change in behavior of consumer, many companies or retailers change the sales channel combinations. The greatest impact of the Web-bases electronic revolution has occurred in companies adopting the click-and-mortar approach. Click- and-mortar is one the strategy used by the companies or retailers that they continue to conduct their business in the physical locations and have added the electronic commerce component to their business activities. According to one study, 37% of United States retailers are selling through a combination of the internet, in stores and catalogs. This represents a growing demand for the business-to-customer package delivery service.
Based on these concerns, retailers in the international marketplace have their work cut out for them. But through proper education of consumers, and the ever-expanding growth of the infrastructure in many countries, the future seems to be leaning heavily towards using the Internet for many needs.
