The story of Adam and Eve was told in a very interesting way through the vision of Mark Twain. We all know the story about Adam and Even both eating the forbidden fruit “apple” and being faced with consequence from God. Twain challenges our aspect by changing the aspect of Adam and Eve. In “The Diaries of Adam and Eve”, Mark Twain sets Adam and Eve up to present gender roles in a way that readers have not been familiar with.

Twain characterized Eve as this a dominate female while also maintaining the stereotypical female role. Let’s take the naming of the animals and everything else in the new world; this was supposedly a job for Adam, the man. Instead Eve took over this role. The story of Adam and Eve told by Mark Twain expresses a variety of gender expectation and gender roles that are parallel to today’s gender expectation roles. In past generations, around the 20’s, 50’s, etc, the relationship between man and women have always been very complex. Man was always views as the head of the household, he was the king. He was expected to provided, be the breadwinner, bring home the bacon. While the woman was expected to cook the bacon. She was viewed as the lesser. Her only aspiration in life were to cook, clean, nurture the man and the kids.

Opposed to today’s modern woman, she can be the breadwinner; they can be leaders but men are seen more relaxed and their obligation to provide is demolishing. Just like in The diaries of Adam and Eve, Eve did majority of the discovering and learning while Adam basically sat around. This is similar to how some men and women are today. In some cases, the modern man exactly believe that because women can be breadwinner today that his obligation to provide and dominate isn’t as important or valued; leaving the woman to provide and dominate over the
