I use to think that being a leader had to do with how leaders control the situation or the movement of their organization. I consider myself very lucky to have been a part of the United States Marine Corps. I think growing up and even up right to the moment of entering boot camp, I assumed that the Marine Corps. was filled with amazing leadership and would teach me how to be a great leader. I am disappointed to say that it wasn’t the case at all. I feel like the military taught me how to manipulate individuals, instead of leading them.

between leaders and mangers. The military is full of managers at each level of power. Leaders who focus on using fear and physical based motivation, do not possess the know how to influence followers ethically. The great leaders that I had the pleasure of working for in the military often had their hands tied by the bad leadership above them. The good leaders could only go so far to lead their followers the way they wanted to influence. Often times I would witness bad leadership constantly watching the positive leaders because they were threatened by their positive influence. I take my degree in Organizational Leadership very seriously.
I am constantly worried that I will fallback on the military way of influencing followers. In my past I was a very rigid and abrasive Marine that was often put in the leadership role because my superiors knew that I would get the job done no matter what. It was not until the very last year of my military duty, when the light bulb turned on. What I started to notice was if I influenced others in a positive respectful way, the mission seemed to flow easier and the followers were happy. I want to know how she drives her followers to accomplish tasks effectively. I am also very curious about what she has gained from her challenges and failures. One of the reasons why I chose her for my leadership interview was on the basis that she has worked for different organizations. I want explore what type of leadership styles she had to use at AIG, MetLife and at her current position. For now I am going to assume that she had to approach each organization differently due to their unique cultures. It will also be very crucial to find out how she thinks followers should be lead and

According to Nofi, “The United States Marine Corps is America's best-known military unit and perhaps the most famous in the world” . The traditions of the Marine Corps date way back since 1775 and the current regulations have been derived from the way marines in the past carried out their day to day activities. Some customs have been incorporated into the current orders and regulations to be able to standardize conduct of the marines. It is important for a marine to know and keep in mind traditional customs because one should never forget their heritage, therefore, practiced tradition in the Marine Corps should take precedence over Marine Corps orders and regulations .
Natural born leaders are almost nonexistent in today’s military. Military members have to complete numerous leadership classes as you progress through the military ranks whether you are an enlisted or as an officer. There are many attributes that people would have to possess to be considered a great leader. Some of those attributes include honesty, respect, trustworthy, and enthusiasm just to name a few. There have been many leaders I have worked with or for over my past 19 years in the Army. One of the most important one would have to be honesty. Honesty is important because if the people that work for you cannot believe what you tell them, they will never trust you or support you. Employees can make or break their supervisor. If they do not like or trust the manager they will not respect them and they will only do the least amount possible. When your employees believe that, you value their opinion and their work ethic. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, military leadership is based on a concept of duty, service, and self-sacrifice. We take an oath to that effect.” There is no formula for leadership, as great leaders have different leadership styles. When discussing military leaders and what makes them great examples of success, their personalities range from flamboyant and daring to reserved and cautious in battle.
Being in the military I have came across a number of different leadership/management styles and tried to adopt some of those that I thought were effective. The values that we hold in the military are expected to be at a higher standard then our civilian counterpart. This is something that I do not take for granted and try to live by our core values. The core values in the Air Force are what guide our organization and something that I have tried to represent my whole Air Force career. “In May 1995, then-Secretary of the Air Force Sheila Widnall, and then-Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Gen. Ronald Fogleman, established the Air Force Core Values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.” If you as a manager can abide by these values while supervising your people, no matter how many that would be, then morally you can feel like you did your best as a manager.
Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Louis Moeller shaped me into the Recon Marine I wanted to be and the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) that I am now. By embodying the Recon Creed and always setting the example, he made me want to be an NCO that my troops would look up to and want to follow. Even when not in charge he was constantly the one peers and junior Marines alike, turned to for guidance and inspiration. To this day, I still find myself asking “What would Louis do?” when confronted with a leadership dilemma.
I have had both the pleasure and discomfort of being led by good and bad leaders. The way I simply define leadership is by being able to do as you say. Lead from the front and Set the example.
The United States Merchant Marines The United States Merchant Marines are complied of thousands of the best trained men and women of today to man naval or commercial ships. Merchant Marines have dated back even further then the United States Coast Guard. The Merchant Marines have had a huge impact on the United States Navy since they have been established. Merchant Marines have manned fleets of ships for the U.S. Navy which carry imports and export during peace time.

MST refers to psychological trauma resulting from a sexual assault or repeated, threatening harassment experienced during military service (pg. 3). Now, let us take a moment and think about the relevance of this subject? When we think of our women in combat, what do we see? We see strong and courteous females. What makes a leader? The Army defines leadership as providing purpose, direction, and motivation while accomplishing the mission and improving the organization. I believe the Army created the definition, competencies, and attributes based on leaders of the past. MAJ Richard D. Winters, I believe, is one of those leaders. MAJ Winters is known for his command of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during WWII.
I believe that leadership is not something that you are born with, but that has to be learned over time. You learn to become a leader from watching other leaders, and also from personal experience. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. Being a leader does not mean you get to boss people around by telling them what to do. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day. Military qualities include; loyalty to the nation, duty, and selfless service. If you 're looking to be the next leader in a military unit then you must determine what is expected of your unit. Leaders have a good morale, discipline, and proficiency. They are able to do what is asked of them and then some. They would literally die for what they believe in, and pass on their knowledge to younger generations to protect this country. The Webster Dictionary defines leadership as an office or position, the capacity to lead, the act or an instance of leading (Merriam-Webster, 2011). Leader is defined as; a person who directs a military force or unit, a person who has commanding authority or influence (Merriam-Webster, 2011). The Army defines leadership as the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization. (Department of the Army, 2006 pg 1-2)
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
