The Roaring Twenties were known as a time of economic boom, pop culture and social developments. This was a time when women began to break norms, they acted rebelliously such as wearing releveling clothing, smoking, and drinking. These women were known as “flappers” who wanted to change their roles in the 1920’s. Birth control activist, Margaret Sanger sought to change the world where women had access to a low cost, effective contraception pill. In “The Morality of Birth Control” Sanger battled opponents who claimed that contraception would cause women to become immoral. The author uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and fallacies to back up her claim while touching on issues in the church, advancements of women, and the source of disease in the world.
Sanger’s speech was written in first person which helps the audience see her perspective more easily. The speaker also uses the word “we” when discussing what is desired for women. This word choice creates a stronger connection between Sanger and all women. It persuades the audience to support Sanger because she is on the side of the women. The intended audience is to both men and women. For example, when Sanger states that the “principle that Birth Control should be available to every adult man and woman.” (2). Sanger explains that people who aren’t fit to care for a child shouldn’t bare children. She goes on to explain that the less irresponsible and reckless people there are “the less immortality shall exist”. Sanger wants to stop the disease known as over population at the source which is in the hands of women controlling the number of offspring they bring into the world. Margaret Sanger, a well known feminist and women's reproductive right activist in USA history wrote the famous speech: The Children's Era. This speech focuses on the topic of women's reproductive freedom. Sanger uses rhetorical forms of communication to persuade and modify the perspectives of the audience through the use of analogy and pathos. She uses reason, thought and emotion to lead her speech.
Sanger continues backing her statement with the examples in education, labor, and that the church had caused women to be looked down upon. Sanger spoke on principles of Birth Control, they include: “it should be available to every adult, that every user should be taught how to use it correctly, that women should have the right to control their bodies and whether to have children.” (Jenson, 166). Margaret Sanger was, at large, a birth control activist, but this speech was more about the questioning of birth control corrupting morality in women. People must remember, in the day and age where Sanger presented this speech, November 1921, women were considered very far from equal and much closer to servants or maids. In her speech, I saw that ethos was present in the sense that she gave herself credibility. Through Sanger’s detailed words and actions, and her statements including the presence of scientists and, or, professionals, the masses of listening people could infer that she was very well informed and solid in her statements. Though she presented herself as agreeable, Sanger was firm in her beliefs. In addition, Sanger says, “We desire to stop at its source the disease, poverty and feeble-mindedness and insanity which exist today, for these lower the standards of civilization and make for race deterioration. We know that the masses of people are growing wiser and are using their own minds to decide their individual conduct” (Sanger, par.15). Margaret Sanger though a determined selfish women did not get everything the way she wanted it to be. She hung up fliers in immigrant neighborhoods just so the poor or colored would go to the clinic. She wanted these people to go to the birth control clinics so they couldn’t reproduce. Margaret believed that if you couldn’t support the family you already have you shouldn’t have more children and she was a strong believer that the inferior race should not be able to reproduce. One can see as a result of her fight and her persistent distribution of Birth Control how determined she was to help women have control in their lives. Sanger didn't necessarily fight just for the sake of women to have access to Birth Control but she also fought for equality. Mary Anne Warren’s “On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion” describes her justification that abortion is not a fundamentally wrong action for a mother to undertake. By forming a distinction between being genetically human and being a fully developed “person” and member of the “moral community” that encompasses humanity, Warren argues that it must be proven that fetuses are human beings in the morally relevant sense in order for their termination to be considered morally wrong. Warren’s rationale of defining moral personhood as showcasing a combination of five qualities such as “consciousness, reasoning, self-motivated activity, capacity of communication, and self-awareness” forms the basis of her argument that a fetus displays none of these elements that would justify its classification as a person and member of the morally relevant community (Timmons 386).
Why Abortion is Immoral by Don Marquis is an essay that claims that abortion is morally wrong, and uses one argument in particular to explain why. He argues that many of us would agree that it is wrong to kill a human, and if you believe that then you should also have that view on abortions. If you think killing is wrong then you think all killing is wrong and the persons biological state, whether it is when a person is a fetus, one years old, or thirty years old, makes no difference. He then explains that killing is wrong not only because it is immoral, but wrong because it deprives the victim of life and the enjoyments one would have otherwise experienced; which Marquis believes is the greatest lost one can suffer (Marquis, 189). Given certain circumstances Marquis agrees there are cases where killing is acceptable, but nonetheless it is immoral.
In Thomas B. Edsall’s “The Two Revolutions,” Edsall analyzes these two major revolutions that have transpired in American history: the socio-cultural or rights movement and the technological, scientific, and economic revolution (TSE). The sociocultural revolution involved the rights concerning workingwomen, women’s work and workplace rights, demographic change, sexual freedom and abortion rights. Post-World War II, America faced a race-based freedom movement, which worked parallel to the decay of sexual mores. Further, the “rights” revolution worked inclusively of the contraceptive revolution. The contraceptive revolution was a result of the innovation of antibiotics, surgical abortion, fertility techniques and more, allowing women to delay childbirth and focus on careers, for instance. With sex-based discrimination faltering as a result of this movement, it paved the way for an immense admittance of women into the workforce. Moreover, the resulting developments of this movement were observable in Vatican II (1965), which instigated the modernization of sex roles within the Catholic Church. Therefore, it is clear that the “rights” revolution was not limited to America, but a movement visible throughout the world.
After reading Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World I was confounded by how accurate Huxley’s prediction of modern day sexual attitudes was. Huxley’s portrayal of Lenina Crowne is especially profound, because Lenina represents the exact opposite woman of Huxley’s time, but a woman that could be found in modern society. In order to hone my critical thinking skills, I was assigned to review a speech and write a critical thinking essay about it. I reviewed the speech “The Morality of Birth Control” by Margaret Sanger. She delivered the aforementioned speech on 18th November 1921 at Park Theatre, New York. In her speech she discusses the importance of birth control and how different people perceive this idea. She also lays emphasis on how important it is to create awareness among the people about birth control. American society has come a long way in identifying and defending women’s human rights and humanity. However, women will always be essentially different than men because of their ability to convey with children. We are reminded of this by current political debates concerning abortion and contraception, which some have called a “war on women”. The transformation of gender relations since the beginning of the 20th century is one of the most rapid change in human history. Men had legal powers over the lives of their children and wives. Wife beating was never strictly legal in the Unites States. The ruling of men over women had emerged by the end of the 18th century. The movement for the right
