Although I myself am not of any African descendants, I feel proud of people like Marcus Garvey who stood up for what they believed was right. The reason as to why I support Garvey’s philosophy is that he had the desire to help Africans find their own identity and be proud of it. He called for African unity. His desire for Africa to have its own flag and government just like dominant countries in Europe inspired him to call for an African renaissance that would empower Africans to realize how powerful they are if they unite and embrace their African culture and history. His call for Africans to be proud of their African culture and heritage definitely encouraged them to gain assurance in themselves. In the end, nevertheless, the most powerful and lasting symbol of unity that Marcus Garvey presented and left to African people was the U.N.I.A Flag. David Hammons’ inspiration derives from Marcus Garvey. He believes that the flag became an African nationalist representation for the universal liberation of African people. These figures include Marcus Garvey, Elijah Muhammad , and Malcolm X. Also, the complexity and a variety of viewpoints on Black Nationalism as a whole are discussed. The focus is placed on the difference between extreme Black Nationalism and more passive manifestations. American history was characterized by the ugly reality of racial discrimination and different individuals and groups took part in fighting the vice (Library of Congress). African-Americans responded in different ways. For instance Booker T. Washington (1856-1915), advocated for industrial schooling for African-Americans and gradual social adjustment but opposed political and civil rights. The reformer Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) called for complete racial separatism and even started the popular project of "Back-to-Africa” where Africans would return to their origin. A different however was adopted which emphasized that African-Americans were in America to stay and would fight for their freedom and political equality. During the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s, African Americans worked and fought to receive what they deserved, civil rights, political power and basically freedom from stereotypes. There were several leaders who helped forge the path to start the movement, including W.E.B Dubois, Oscar Micheaux, and Marcus Garvey. W.E.B Dubois was adamant on creating black culture without having a white culture influence. He believed that 1900 was a great time to reverse stereotypes against African Americans. Dubois also was a co-founder of the NAACP and a leader in the black literary movement. Oscar Micheaux used film to portray the brutality that whites had against blacks. Marcus Garvey led a movement to unite all blacks, regardless of where you are from, because they are all descendants of Africa. These people established 3 of the 5 social institutions, education through the literary movement, media through Oscar’s movies, and family through Garvey’s movement. With these social institutions being set up, it helped forge the path for Black Freedom.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American activist and leader in the civil rights movement as well as a Baptist Minister. In his brave life, Martin gave us his inspirational speeches and was a crucial essential in the demolishing of legal segregation. He was also a key role in the voting act of 1965 and the creation of the civil rights act in 1964. Martin, along with his other medals of honor won a Nobel Peace prize in 1964. To this day we continue to extol him since his assassination on the April of 1968. We know how it ended but to find out how he came this far we must start from the begging.
Marcus Garvey founded the UNIA in 1916. Marcus Garvey was a black nationalist from Jamaica. He brought the UNIA to America in desires of reestablishing black pride by returning African Americans to Africa and Africa to Africans. (Davidson, et al, p. 661) Marcus Garvey pushed for the separation of the races. “When Garvey spoke at the first national UNIA convention in 1920, over 25,000 supporters jammed Madison Square Garden in New York City to listen” (Davidson, et at, p. 661). The gathering was the first mass movement of African Americans in history. (Davidson, et at, p. 661) The UNIA had over 30 branches and over half a million people. Marcus Garvey was sentenced to prison in 1925 for mail fraud. He oversold stock in his company, Black Star Line, which was founded to return African Americans to Africa. Although his vision was destroyed, the image of a dignified black man standing up against racial bigotry and intolerance was not. (Davidson, et at, p. 661)

The Concept of the veil has been a significant symbol of clearly differentiating from the whites, in aspects of political, economical and social prospects. Durkheim explained symbol as “something that stands for something else”(pg. 135). It is a symbol that calls up shared notions and values. In the example of the Blacks in the south, the veil symbolized an “iron curtain” separating the two races, separation and invisibility, of the black and white. The veil had previously been worn because of previous traditions demanding a clear separation of the sexes. The veil is seen as a social barrier to prevent the “others”, black African Americans, from surpassing into the clean and pure white world. Nonetheless Du bois also states, that its possible for one to, lift up the veil when one wishes, and he can also exist in a region on neither side, white nor black, which shows Du bois’ many different meaning and function with the symbol of the veil.

Benjamin Franklin thoroughly explains what the Constitution does for people and why it has faults. By combining positives and negatives, Benjamin Franklin is able to bring confusion to the reader which may sometimes allow that specific individual to conceive an entirely different opinion. From his speech, we can find numerous sentences that support his own opinion and yet we can also find sentences that explain the opposite of his appeal. Not everyone has the same mindset and I believe that Benjamin Franklin used his specific style in order to cause readers to think for themselves instead of using the opinion stated.
Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a powerful black revolutionary and race leader who influenced a great many people in his time and continues to do so through reggae music. Many of Marcus Garvey's lessons and ideals have found a voice in the lyrics of conscious reggae musicians past and present. From internationally famous musicians such as Bob Marley and Burning Spear, to the music and words of The Rastafari Elders, reggae musicians have found inspiration in Marcus Garvey.
The reason I believe this is a quality book that deserves more study is because it involves Marcus Garveyâ€TMs most renowned accomplishment, the organization of the UNIA. It also shows how Marcus overcame his failures to become a black role model and leader. All of the books on Marcus Garvey show people that no matter what happens, whether you fail or succeed, you can become a successful person as long as you believe in what you’re doing.
