Benefits and Drawbacks of the Development of the West Manifest Destiny, a necessary evil to make progress for America. With the opening of western borders, settlers spread across the country like a plague. Spreading all across “open” land, ignoring the previous occupants who would be cast off from society. The settlement of the West was like a wave crashing, displacing grains of sand, yet simultaneously keeping water in motion when reaching for the moon and stars. As the settlers were hoping to achieve their dreams, they caused havoc in their wake. Gold in California would cause a massive migration in a search for riches, and free farm land in the midwest would attract prospective farmers. For the US was an uncultivated bounty of rich materials that could be accessed easily and be made into fortunes unto themselves. Silver, gold, iron, oil, and coal just to name a few. Events such as the California Gold rush would fuel Manifest Destiny and the settlement of the West. It would also provide valuable materials to produce new, top of the line technologies like telegraphs and railroads to connect one side of the country to another. Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie (just to name a few) would capitalize on the opportunities given out West. Whether it be steel, oil, or trains, it would build America from the ground up to what it is today. However, America is now in worse shape than prior to Manifest Destiny, as the extraction of these resources would place an environmental toll on this country. Techniques such as strip mining would lead to deforestation, and can lead to “The dramatic impact of losses of habitats for millions of species.
