Should Arts and Sports Programs be Equally Funded? Schools around the United States value sports programs and art programs along with their education system. Having extra-curricular activities allow a release for students to enjoy their favorite activities and a way for students to stay out of trouble. It’s considered valuable to have a large variety of options for students to choose from based on their interests and to discover who they are as a person. However, it’s obvious that some schools tend to value the sports programs over art programs, so funding in schools goes more towards sports. Art programs are hidden in the shadows of sports programs and don’t receive nearly as much funding. The sports programs usually do have valid arguments as to why they receive more but they also have arguments that they can’t back up. Regardless of what’s necessary for the sports team, it still isn’t fair to leave one program behind just because the other is more valued. Motor skills are important even at the early stages of childhood because they help the growth of muscles. There are fine motor skills and gross motor skills that each individual uses. Fine motor skills include writing and doing small physical activities. Gross motor skills are larger physical activities that might include running or playing sports. Students may be working on their fine motor skills in classrooms but they’re not working on their gross motor skills. Sports teams replace their uniforms almost yearly even though it’s hardly necessary. “The theatre department only has thousands of dollars; the rest is produced by parents of the students participating or fundraisers which can only make so much.” (The Battle of the Budgets). Art programs are severely underfunded that clothing stores sell small items that helps donate towards keeping those programs in school. That alone shows the unfair funding between arts and sports because sports programs usually don’t need the extra help. Sports programs may inspire kids to keep their grades above a C, but students who are in art programs have shown that they do better in classes and on tests. “Kids who took part in the program performed better on six different categories of literacy and critical thinking skills than those who did not.” (10 Studies). Even if art programs didn’t help academically, it shouldn’t matter because art programs should be there for students that find interest in them. Art programs also help close the gap between classes and offers low income children to be involved in the same things as high class
