Persistence, “to go on resolutely or stubbornly in spite of opposition, importunity, or warning” or “to be insistent in the repetition or pressing of an utterance (such as a question or opinion)” (Merriam-Webster.con). To be persistent is important to create and maintain great leaders. Leaders such as Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth, and even Adolf Hitler all possessed the ability to be persistent. An inspirational individual who showed persistence immensely is Malala Yousafzai. Malala Yousafzai portrayed the idea of persistence through many aspects of her life. Malala was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. Her parents, Ziauddin and Toor Pekai, named her after a Pashtun heroine, Malalai (Yousafzai 15). Growing up, she shared her father’s love of learning and education. The Taliban, a political group, took control of her home, Swat Valley, in 2007. On her sixteenth birthday, July 12, 2013, Malala gave a speech at the United Nations about education rights for every girl and boy. The United Nations ended up declaring July 12, her birthday, “Malala Day” (Malala.org). Yousafzai promised that every year on her birthday, she would do something that contributed to children’s rights. She has not failed to follow through with this promise, as every year on July 12, Malala has gone to another region to proclaim her message. Fighting to learn is one of the many problems women face each day, additionally it does not help when the opportunity to be educated is not given to over 6 million teenage girls alone. The women that are confident enough to stand up and fight for schooling are usually respected. Being one of the very few people in Pakistan who fought for better teachings, Malala is now well respected in many countries. Malala Yousafzai (Yoo-saff-zay) was shot by the Taliban in 2012; after a long recovery, she miraculously advocates for education around the world.

Malala was flown from Pakistan to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England. With the extensive surgery the doctors had done to Malala, she had a tube down her throat and she could not talk. She was very confused. She woke up only knowing that she was not in Pakistan anymore. She could only write down what she wanted to say.
