Persistence, “to go on resolutely or stubbornly in spite of opposition, importunity, or warning” or “to be insistent in the repetition or pressing of an utterance (such as a question or opinion)” (Merriam-Webster.con). To be persistent is important to create and maintain great leaders. Leaders such as Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth, and even Adolf Hitler all possessed the ability to be persistent. An inspirational individual who showed persistence immensely is Malala Yousafzai. Malala Yousafzai portrayed the idea of persistence through many aspects of her life. Malala was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. Her parents, Ziauddin and Toor Pekai, named her after a Pashtun heroine, Malalai (Yousafzai 15). Growing up, she shared her father’s love of learning and education. The Taliban, a political group, took control of her home, Swat Valley, in 2007. The Taliban said that they were going to ensure peace and security by using their version of the Islamic Law, which they wanted everyone to abide by (BBC.com). On her sixteenth birthday, July 12, 2013, Malala gave a speech at the United Nations about education rights for every girl and boy. The United Nations ended up declaring July 12, her birthday, “Malala Day” (Malala.org). Yousafzai promised that every year on her birthday, she would do something that contributed to children’s rights. She has not failed to follow through with this promise, as every year on July 12, Malala has gone to another region to proclaim her message. In 2014, she went to Nigeria to speak regarding the kidnappings of young girls by a terrorist group there, Boko Haram. This group is similar to the Taliban, they also do not want young girls to go to
