You can use any kind of string you want as long as it has ridges and texture. Really smooth string is hard for the salt to latch onto and may result in no crystals at all. Once this step is complete you will move the jar into a safe place. Depending on the type of salt you use your crystals will grow faster in different places . For example epsom salt grows faster in the fridge, which is a colder darker plate. Every other type works better in the sun where the solar energy can get it to it.
After a while you will start to see your crystals forming. Times may vary based on where you put them and what salt you use. Once you see your crystals forming you can take them out and examine them. Depending on the salt they will have different forms. Some may be clumpy, small, needle like, pointed, rounded, large or discolored. When sugar is dissolved in water, the solution does not conduct electricity, because there are no ions in the solution. A rainbow is one of the most amazing things that can be seen in the sky. However, many people do not know how rainbows are formed. For a start, I will start by explaining how rainbows are formed. A rainbow occurs as a result of refraction and dispersion of white light, as it passes through a prism. Each type of crystal has its own properties and shapes. Crystals are an organized arrangement of atoms and molecules. The atoms sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) make up salt crystals and have a cubic shape. A salt solution will contain sodium and chlorine atoms that are separated by water molecules. Crystals are formed when the water evaporates from the solution and the sodium and chlorine atoms start bonding together (Crystallization). According to the background of all-science-fair-projects “Placing a porous material like a sponge, charcoal or broken ceramic in the salt solution helps to draw in the mixture through capillary action”(Science). Crystals are left behind from the porous material’s water evaporating from the surface of it. Evaporation of water is what drives the crystallization process. According to all-science-fair-projects “Placing the solution in a dry place or under a slight breeze will help the crystals to grow faster” 0(Science).
