In our lives, we have to choose between different courses of action every day. Think about the last time you made a major decision. In Romeo and Juliet, the characters make different major decisions based on their maturity and emotions. Emotions can make people not think and act rash without thinking of future consequences. Maturity can cause people to act with prudence. One of the major decisions made by Romeo is fighting Tybalt. Another decision made by Friar Lawrence was marrying Romeo and Juliet. Another decision was Romeo and Juliet’s suicide at the end of the play.
When Romeo decides to fight Tybalt, his decision is affected by his emotions and his maturity. Before Romeo fights Tybalt he states, ”And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now”
Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare's first authentic tragedy. It is about two lovers who commit suicide when their feuding families prevent them from being together. The play has many characters, each with its own role in keeping the plot line. Some characters have very little to do with the plot; but some have the plot revolving around them. While the character of Friar Lawrence spends only a little time on stage, he is crucial to the development of the conclusion of the play. It is Friar Laurence’s good intentions, his willingness to take risks and his shortsightedness that lead to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
Romeos decision to murder Tybalt can be justified as a hasty and rash decision, Romeo
Life is filled with difficult situations and tough choices to make. The question is, should we choose to make them ourselves? Some people feel it's best to do things alone, while others do not. For example, most of the characters in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare that are analyzed in the text, “What’s the Rush?: Young Brains Cause Doomed Love” by Lexi Tucker, do not consider other’s opinions at all. However, the opinions of people who love us positively affect our choices so it would be smart to consider them in most cases, but not in those that are very personal.
As shown in the book hasty decisions lead to bad things. William Shakespeare has also mentioned this multiple times. There are numerous examples of this in his play Romeo and Juliet. Nevertheless impulsive choices make up most of this well known writing. These decisions are made by various characters and in different ways.
“O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name;” (Shakespeare, 536). In the book, ‘Romeo and Juliet”, by William Shakespeare there is a deeper meaning that Shakespeare is trying to portray other than parents cannot control their children’s hearts. He is trying to portray that a name is only a name and it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things and that even with a different name that person will still be the same person they have always been. Shakespeare is using the characters: Juliet, Romeo, Lord Capulet, Friar Lawrence, and the Nurse to get this message across to the reader or the viewer.
Throughout the play, Tybalt gets into constant fights, having two major ones in act one, scene one, and act three, scene one. The fights occur over small interferences and show a great deal of Tybalt's willingness to fight over anything. In act three, scene one, Tybalt kills Romeo’s best friend in a foolish street fight. Doing so proves Tybalt's unwillingness to lose or follow the “no fighting or death” laws set up by the prince
All of these decisions lead to Romeo and Juliet’s downfall and eventually their deaths. Rushed decision making sometimes seems good, but not thinking out decisions can lead to major consequences and even death as in Romeo and Juliet. Because the world moves so fast now hasty decisions are more common, but this is a mistake since these decisions are often detrimental. Hasty decision making is what separated Romeo and Juliet, they were young and showed their immaturity in the hasty decisions they made. When this lesson is not learned the audience sees the consequences that may result from this lesson not learned, also causing decadence of those who are oblivious to this lesson. We have now read both Pyramus and Thisbe, and Romeo and Juliet. The question we have yet to answer is what has a greater impact on what happened, destiny, or personal choice? We believe that personal choice affected the characters more because they chose to fall in love, Romeo and Juliet rushed into marriage, Pyramus and Thisbe left home on their own terms, and in both stories, the main characters decided to commit suicide. This is something that cannot be determined by the stars, your choices determine what happens, not some mystical prophecy. Though that is what we believe, it is also believed that destiny has a greater impact because they were doomed from the stars.
Romeo did not think ahead when his rage consumed him and as a result of this, he could not openly admit his marriage to the public and his family. Before Tybalt killed Mercutio, Romeo stated to Tybalt “I do protest I never injured thee. But love thee better than thou canst devise.” This means, at first, Romeo said to Tybalt that he loved him for an unknown reason but after hearing the news that Mercutio and Tybalt fought and Mercutio had passed away, his rationality was forgotten. Before commencing another fight, Romeo says “And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now!” This means that he has forgotten about his “love” for Tybalt and instead decides to fight him to the death without any consideration for his marriage’s future. When one looks closely at the story of Romeo and Juliet, one will see that it is a story with many ethical aspects. The first ethical concern was the two feuding families. How moral is it to hate someone only because they have a certain family name? This all come from a time period when people were fairly focused on religion, which teaches us not to hate. I also question this because I think it is ironic that both Romeo and Juliet seem to be fairly religious, since the first person Romeo went to for help was Friar Lawrence, and a few scenes in the play took place in or around the church. I think that this hatred is especially bad in the case of the Capulets and the Montagues, because I was always under the impression that the families had been feuding for so long that no one really knew why they hated each other anymore. This was the beginning of the problems for Romeo and Juliet. They had a moral decision to make. Should they stay true to their families, and deny their love, or should they stay true to their feelings and disgrace their families? In order to resolve this dilemma, Romeo turns to Friar Lawrence, who perhaps could be seen as the most moral character, to begin with. Because he was a holy man, he was the most logical confidant of anyone in the play. People see men of the cloth as reliable and a good source of advice. Of course, Friar Lawrence has every intention of helping the two lovers, also hoping that he could reunite the feuding families. However, unbeknownst to him, everything he will do throughout the play will have an unnerving consequence. No matter what he did to correct what he had done wrong, it only drug him deeper into trouble. Who ever would have thought that by marrying the two young lovers, he would have caused all of this heartache for the families, and really for all of Verona? No one ever considered the fact that two young people wanting to get married would have affected the entire city. Friar Lawrence was only trying to be a good friend and ally, but everything he did just ended up backfiring for him.
The choices Romeo and Juliet make are poor, and eventually resulted in their death. Getting married, killing Tybalt, and thinking with hastyness were all poor choices that lead to both of their deaths. Once in a while making bad choices doesn’t affect someone as much, but making then many times regularly does affect one’s life. This teaches people that we must think our actions through before committing them.

(GS1) The protagonist of the play, Romeo Montague, generates various dilemmas because of the severe choices he makes, especially his decision to kill Tybalt. (GS2) Meanwhile, Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend, is another character who causes impactful changes in the play with his overdramatic personality. In conclusion, in the play Romeo and Juliet both Romeo and Juliet make decisions that, because of their adolescents are quick and are not thought through which really affects their lives and those of the people close to them. In this day and age you see people who are making bad decisions, for example the use of drugs and underage drinking. The decision to do these things is most of the time done by people who are adolescents. These people dont think about the real consequences that it could have later in their live or event the damage that it does to their bodies right now. These people do it without
Teens may seem to make the most stupid, irrational, and rash decisions they possibly could for the seemingly relatively easy lives they live, but being an adolescent isn’t easy. The teen characters from Romeo and Juliet all make some pretty stupid decisions, but they are, in fact, teenagers; their brains are not actually yet fully developed. They don’t have the same capacity to make decisions with the distant future in mind as those of us who do have more developed brains. Therefor, they shouldn’t be held to the same standards as adults, as their brains are just more likely to lean towards risk taking and impulsive behavior - it isn’t their fault. Though adults can help guide adolescents through decisions, teens need to be able to try things and learn by themselves. The adults in this tragedy definitely were not a good example of how to take care of teens, and probably are at fault for the terrible decisions many of the teen characters made, just as much so as the teens themselves.
The story of Romeo and Juliet is an inevitable tragedy. Many events take place, which are quite detrimental to the love Romeo and Juliet have for one another. By mentioning marriage and death together, Shakespeare foreshadows Romeo and Juliet's tragic ending. From the very beginning of the play throughout and to the end, there has always been the intent of a tragedy, and Shakespeare uses much dramatic irony to express this.
