MAHATMA GANDHI “GREAT SOUL” Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is considered to be the Twentieth Century’s modern day Messiah. He was born of a modest middle class family from India and educated in law from the aristocratic society of London, England. Mahatma Gandhi was the paramount leader for Indian nationalism in British-ruled India who exercised non-violent civil disobedience and led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Mahatma Gandhi has inspired people during his lifetime and many after his death. He has inspired men such as Martin Luther King Jr., former South African President, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, and current US President and then-Senator Barack Obama. Martin Luther King Jr. drew from Gandhi’s theories of civil disobedience and non-violence and fashioned his movement with many similarities. Nelson Mandela also followed Gandhi’s teachings after ending apartheid and began helping everyone that faced injustice. Albert Einstein penned Gandhi and informed him that he admired his courage and use of non-violence even though his adversaries choose not to and would like to meet him. Heather Whipps, journalist for Live Science adds, “Martin Luther King Jr. is said to have been heavily influenced by Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence, believing it to be the only logical approach to the problem of race relations in America.” (Famous personalities influenced by Gandhi) Jesus being the exception, no great leader has ever not been influenced and shaped into who they have become, if it were not for other great teachers before them. Gandhi is no exception. His influences have been through the readings of many great books such as Leo Tolstoy’s 1894 novel; The Kingdom of ... ... middle of paper ... ...an extent and understand why he had to choose not to aid in the native African struggle. If he would have chosen to assist in their situation then he would have alienated his people from the British and South African whites and jeopardize his whole agenda for civil rights for his Indian people. “ First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win” (Mahatma Gandhi). Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar. Throughout his life Gandhi helped those in need. He was taught that everyone and everything is holy. He married at the custom age of 19 and went to London to study law. The thing that helped Gandhi promote nonviolence is that he worked his entire life saying that violence didn’t change the way people acted. He lived his life saying that an eye for an eye only made the whole world blind. Gandhi’s nonviolent movement worked because he had something to prove and everyone else in the world agreed with him.

...rew as his friends and family died but that is to be expected. He rooted for the underdog and championed the cause of Jews, blacks, and Chinese. His treatment of the Indians is less clear cut but it is obvious that he knows America treats the Indians like they treated the Phillipinos (the same as the British treated the Boers.)
...Because of Gandhi’s power, his flaw, and his catastrophe, one would say that Gandhi fits the model of a Greek tragic hero. Gandhi’s power was his heightened goodness, proven by his innumerable civil disobedience acts, where he continued to fight even while he was regularly jailed. His flaw was his tolerance and acceptance of everyone which led to his catastrophic assassination by Nathuram Godse. Gandhi’s teachings of nonviolence and peace still live on today, as they have inspired many other human rights leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. Gandhi’s teachings are responsible for the successes of civil rights movements in other countries. He not only helped free India from British rule, but also gave people new thoughts about violence and imperialism around the world. Even today, India continues to live and remember the tutelage of Gandhi.
...to catch the killer. He gave hope to millions of Africans and inspired millions of others elsewhere, but if his successors in government have been less admirable, and if his example has not been followed in countries like Zimbabwe, that should not be surprising. Hard though much of his life had been, Mr Mandela lived long enough to see his work through. He alone could sway opinion for or against the acceptance of agreements, which was crucial in the case of the constitution, greeted by many ANC supporters.

Both Gandhi and King were influenced by Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience”. King was influenced by Gandhi. Thoreau first coined civil disobedience, but the likes of Jesus, and many other historical figures practice some form of breaking current laws to pressure governments to change laws or promote what they believed morally right. Each of these men practiced this and they did so while starting it could be done peacefully.

Mahatma Gandhi was a man of faith and great conviction. He was born into an average Hindu family in India. Like most teenagers he had a rebellious stage when he smoked, spent time with girls and ate meat (forbidden to strict Hindus). The young Gandhi changed as a person while earning a living as a lawyer in South Africa. He came in contact with the apartheid and the future Mahatma began to emerge, one who championed the truth through non-violent resistance. It was between 1915 and his assassination in 1945 that he struggled for India's freedom.
