I was fortunate enough to learn from and practice in an organization with a culture encompassing evidence-based practice, patient-centeredness, working in interprofessional teams, and providing safe/competent holistic care. The University of Colorado Hospital is both a teaching and Magnet facility; furthermore, I believe it is currently one of the longest-tenured Magnet facilities in the US. I always knew the organization was unique; however, now that I’ve practiced at a couple of other hospitals, I can fully appreciate the magnitude of how special the organization is and why it is consistently ranked among the top organizations in the country.

Some of the characteristics of Magnet facilities can include the following:

Being flexible, adaptive, and innovative.
Decentralized organization structure.

Professional autonomy.
Shared governance: nurses who control their professional practice through share accountability and responsibility, participate in decision making, set goals, and negotiate conflict.
Higher levels of job satisfaction: collaborative nurse-physician relationships, adequate nurse staffing, working with a clinically competent team.
Higher levels of quality care and patient satisfaction (Yoder-Wise, 2015, p. 364; Finkelman & Kenner, 2016, pp. 455–477).
My experience with practicing in both Magnet and non-Magnet facilities allowed me to see differences in workload, compensation, empowerment, culture, and career growth. University Hospital expects nurses to be knowledge workers and leaders; moreover, the organization expects nurses to excel professionally, foster evidence-based change, be involved, and participate in the feedback process. The organization was one of the first in Colorado to require new nurse applicants to have a BSN degree. I wasn’t pressured to go
