In the movie, Made in L.A ,directed by Almudena Carracedo, tells the story about 3 Latino immigrants (Maria,Lupe,and Maura) fighting for their labour rights in the garment industry. The story takes place in L.A where all 3 women are working for 10 to 12 hours in the garment industry to support themselves and their families. Maria, Lupe and Maura decide to take action against the retailer Forever 21 as all garment workers including them have been sewing Forever 21 clothing and are receiving low wages and are forced to work in unlawful conditions. Maura, Lupe, and Maria decide to go to the garment community centre (non-profit) organization to seek help as the centre gives information about the workers rights and how they have the right to complain about any issues they face in their workplace. …show more content…
The president of Forever 21 refuses to take responsibility as he says that he does not know whether these workers worked directly for him or not but in reality, these workers are Forever 21’s responsibility as they hire manufacturers who subcontracts to factories who hire the garment workers ; and as Forever 21 is paying less to the manufacturers who in return are paying less to factories and in return garment workers are receiving less money compared to the amount of work they have to do. As the president of Forever 21 refused to take responsibility, the workers decided to file a lawsuit, campaign and boycott against Forever 21. The lawsuit against Forever 21 was rejected by the court as there was no evidence showing that these workers are their contractors who actually worked for the retailer and made their clothes for them. Estrella and Cleofilas have come to accept that they don’t get much for their hard labor. They both learned how society looks at immigrants from other countries. They both were looked down upon. Estrella works hard in the hot heat. She comes to realize that picking grapes doesn’t earn enough money, and it all depended on the piece rate of the grapes. Society turns around, eats the grapes and doesn’t think twice about how the grapes came to their mouths. When the society doesn’t think of the age or person that has picked the grapes.
Another foundations that I can add is effect social change, this reflect the type of movement that the workers create based on the fact that they were being discriminated in the company, affecting the lives. Last foundations that connect on this film it is Chicano film language, we can see how the combination of languages, between Spanish and English and cultural codes that the people from the film shows as part of the Mexican American culture. For example these three techniques foundations create a strong image to this film in the way that we can see the scene where the woman’s are in prison because of the movement. The whole scene creates an atmosphere of anger, and desperation, referring to the woman’s expressions “queremos la formula, queremos camas, queremos baño”. Look down at your shoes, shirt, or pants; all these products you use everyday have a high chance they were produced in Maquiladoras located in Mexico. These Maquiladoras provide cheap labor for big name companies, which provides inexpensive products for the consumers. In consequence of the cheap labor, the workers and residents that live near these Maquiladoras are negatively impacted everyday. The film Maquilapolis is arguing that the practices of Maquiladoras are unethical and inhumane. The clip 0:26:00-0:29:00 of the film argues that the pollution and waste created from the Maquiladoras come with negative consequences for the workers and nearby residents. The play “Real Women Have Curves” is written by Josefina Lopez, and the story is based on her own experiences when working in her sister’s sewing factory without legal documentation. The main plot in “Real Women Have Curves” is the daily life of works revolve around the production deadlines. The play is also adapted into a film in 2002. In the play there are only five female characters dominate the whole story while the movie give a more complete view of protagonist’s life outside of factory rather than just telling the story within the sewing factory, such as including the father and grandpa’s reactions and actions. Both the play and movie are set in a sewing factory in Easy Los Angeles. In the play, the story is focusing on the sewing factory’s owner, Estela, and she is an undocumented worker and afraid of being catch by the INS. However, in the movie, the story is told from the point of view of Ana, Estela’s sister, who just graduated from high school.
Since the Industrial Revolution in the United States of America, working conditions for women and minorities have not been given equal pay or top positions in the work place. Women being degraded by the men in charge, and minorities constantly at odds with one another so they will not form a Union. Such things keep those with low-status in the job in line, and not feel they are equal to the ones in charge. People from other countries are in search for a better life elsewhere, and take the risk of going to the United States illegally to seek out the American Dream. The articles Working at Bazooms by Meika Loe and At a Slaughterhouse, Some Things Never Die by Charlie LeDuff deal with the working conditions for women and minorities. Workers in both articles have to deal with having terrible working conditions, harassment in the workplace, low-status within the job, and the constant fear of job loss.
In her narrative, “Serving in Florida”, she describes life as low income American through her experiences as a hotel maid. Ehrenreich vividly describes the inhumane working conditions in which many Americans must endure in order to survive. Employees are fearful of losing their jobs if they do not meet the certain demands of managers who unfairly exert control on them. In addition, Ehrenreich addresses a common misconception among Americans, that those living in poverty are not hard working people, she proves this to be an unfair portrayal of the underprivileged. Ehrenreich works alongside Maria, a Hispanic woman who is the housekeeping manager and Carla, an African American woman who is also a maid. Carla and Ehrenreich are given nineteen rooms to clean with one half hour break. Carla suffers from joint pain which causes her to move slowly. Ehrenreich notes that Carla’s slow pace will probably result in the loss of her job at the hotel because of the other immigrant workers who are much faster than she. Even Carla is fully aware that she is not valued as an employee, “She broods, too, about all the little evidences of disrespect that come her way, and not only from management. ‘They don’t care about us,’ she tells me of the hotel guests; in fact, they don’t notice us at all unless something gets stolen from a room— ‘then they’re all over you’” (277). Individuals such as Carla are extremely hard working, but despite their strong work ethic, low income citizens are seen as disposable by their employers. Not only are they looked down upon by their employers, but they also are treated with disrespect by the people in which they serve. The guests make automatic assumptions because she is from a lower class standing. They assume that she must degrade herself to theft in order to survive because she is not as fortunate. The
The documentary, Made in Bangladesh, made by CBC, addresses the collapse of the Rana Plaza in Bangladesh and the increase in awareness that came from the outside. The documentary addresses the lack of care that was put into safety for the workers by both the factory owners and the contracting retail companies, focusing on the years leading up to the Rana Plaza catastrophe, where clothing made for Canadian consumers of Joe Fresh apparel was being made. The documentary discusses the circumstances around the working conditions of the Bangladesh garment industry. CBC, as a Canadian producer and broadcaster, focuses on the production of clothes sent to Canada from the factories in Bangladesh. They use facts and research alongside personal stories of workers and survivors to put interest the viewers from both a pathos and logos approach.
The movie opens up with rural images of thousands of migrant workers being transported in trucks with a short introduction by Edward Murrow and some occasional interventions of parts of an interview made to the secretary of labor after he saw the impacting images, and to the different people who have seen the lives the workers lead. Most of the secretary’s commentaries depict the exclusion that these people have since they are basically people who are silently crying out for assistance to stop harvesting the fields of their shame, or at least to hope for potential raises and better work conditions. From Florida to New Jersey, and from Mexico to Oregon, these people including women and children travel around the states following the sun and the demand from the seasonal goods while working around a hundred and thirty-six days earning and average of nine hundred dollars a year.
The people of Omelas have become so consumed with happiness that they can’t see anyone but themselves in bliss. The residents of Omelas can only imagine the destruction fair treatment would bring. “If the child were brought up…all the prosperity and beauty and delight of Omelas would wither and be destroyed…To exchange all the goodness and grace of every life in Omelas for…the chance of happiness of one” (LeGuin 5) The people of omelas will do whatever it takes to keep the child oppressed to maintain peace and prosperity within the utopia. Saving the child will in essence destroy everyones happiness. This injustice is not only apparent in the city of Omelas, but also apparent in the world of inhuman labor. As the child of Omelas is forced into confinement, sweat shop workers also face the need to be forced in to labor. Both are pushed to the side and neglected in order to maintain the happiness of the oppressor. Angelo young, a writer for International Business Times covered the Chinese labor strike. Chinese workers were tired of unjust and unfair treatment so, in unison the workers stood to big business. “A strike at a Chinese factory that makes shoes for Nike, Timberland, Kenneth Cole and other popular brands grew on Tuesday to about 5,000 workers who are demanding their employer pay its government-mandated housing fund money.” (Young, Angelo. Also, as immigrant this affects Zainab and Mauna, because it allows them to see the injustice and the oppression in immigration system. The film illustrates how society labels illegal immigrants as outside the norm, marginalized Tarek. Immigrant are being deported and exposed to the injustice system.
In conclusion, the two films that were shown were extremely persuasive, logical, and fact-based. Working conditions were and still are extremely harsh in sweatshops. After the 1911 Shirt Waist Fire many new laws and regulations were brought about. Such as, keeping exit door unlocked at all times and sprinklers in case of a fire. Alta Gracia is a movement that not only helps its people by treating them with respect and dignity, but also the buyers. When buying a t-shit or sweatshirt from Alta Gracia, you feel ecstatic. American Labor Unions and labor laws are still in the process of improving but it is up to us to enforce it.

The emotional letter that Juan left for his mother might be one of the most emotional scenes in the documentary. The pure emotions that the letter was written by Juan to her mother leaves the audience with the bonds and emotions felt between the kids and families. Juan Carlos’s father abandoned the family years ago and left to New York, consequently Juan believe it is his responsibility to provide for his family. He also wants to find his father in New York and confronts him about why he has forgotten about them. The story of Juan is not just about migration of children, but also the issue of family separation. The documentary does not dehumanize but rather bring the humane and sensitive lens to the story of Juan where the human drama that these young immigrants and their families live. Juan Carlos is not the first of Esmeralda’s sons to leave for the United states, his nine-year-old brother Francisco was smuggled into California one month earlier. Francisco now lives with Gloria, his grandmother, who paid a smuggler $3,500 to bring him to Los Angeles, California. Once Juan Carlos is in the shelter for child migrants his mother eagerly awaits him outside. After she sees him she signs a paper that says if Juan Carlos tries to travel again, he will be sent to a foster home.
1. Before watching this film, I was unaware that there were still working conditions for factory garment workers that were the same conditions as the sweat shop workers had back before there were labor laws. I believe that this is the same unawareness that most of the public has when it comes to who is making their clothing. I could not believe that the garment worker was getting paid just cents for each clothing item they produced, but then the store was able to mark up the price of the clothing and make huge profits. Forever twenty-one completely disregarded the people who were producing their clothing.
Employee stakeholders have another story. The discrimination lawsuits ranging from female employees not getting equal pay or equal positions, to disabled employees, class-action lawsuits stating that Wal-Mart doctors questionnaires to prevent disabled workers from applying, Wal-Mart does not rank very high with these employees. Lawsuits stemming from Wal-Mart’s failure to monitor labor conditions at oversea factories and hires illegal immigrants add to the rift in relations between the employees and the company.
