The sources which are used need to be authentic and proven so that they will assist in the analysis of the data provided and decision making. They can be divided into two main categories which are Internal sources and External sources. The key source in internal sources are accounting records, they provide the details of past business transactions and are used to make financial reports. They show the current standing of the company, as in if the profit made losses or profits over the last few months but that is not the only thing that they show, they indicate details of products, personal information and details about an employee and many other things. External sources from which information is usually gathered are government policies, records, published documents, competitors, media and journals. Businesses use MIS at all levels of operation to collect, process and store data. Management uses this data in the form of information needed to carry out the daily operations of the business. Everyone who works in business, from someone who pays the bills to the person who makes employment decisions, uses MIS. In fact, many (if not most) companies concentrate on the alignment of MIS with business goals to achieve competitive advantage over other companies. "The major components of the MIS are the database, the model base, and the user interface. The database is used to store important data, the model base has the required statistical models in order to analyze the large amounts of data, and the user interface allows the user of the software to navigate through it and use it with ease."(mays.tamu.edu, 2013)
Monitoring and evaluation are integral parts of management and provide a link between planning and implementation. While monitoring focuses on the activities and outputs, evaluation focuses on the outcome and goals. Monitoring focuses on inputs and outputs and is the continuous process of gathering information to measure against the goals and objectives. Evaluation, like monitoring, is a continuous process. Evaluation provides feedback on whether plans have been met and the reasons for success or failure. Evaluation should highlight shortcomings so they can be identified and corrected. It should provide direction for future plans. It is important to monitor and assess the on-going performance of teams and individuals, in order to evaluate the progress towards agreed objectives. Monitoring mostly involves keeping track of what is going on. By undertaking this regularly, we have the opportunity to make changes and adjustments, to ensure that any areas of concern are addressed.

Another thing that Walmart used to be revolutionary in their supply chain was the use of scanning barcodes in 1983. Before barcodes objects had to be read by a skilled cashier. With barcodes all that was needed was a quick scan and the computer would do all the work. This greatly sped up checkout time and made tracking inventory and data collection much faster and easier for both customers and the employees.
