My current employer, Hughes Network Systems, will partially sponsor my MBA. In the short term returning to them as part of the Strategic and Solutions Management team is an attractive option. In the longer term, I would like to work as the CEO of my own high-tech telecom company, using my vision and experience together with my Smith MBA, to develop cutting-edge strategies and products to empower companies to better utilize technology for establishing beneficial customer relationships.
The MS in Telecommunications Program at the University of Maryland offered me a unique opportunity to engage in cross-disciplinary coursework from both the A. James Clark School of Engineering and the Robert H. Smith School of Business at. Courses such as “Strategic Management in Telecommunications”, “Economics of International Telecommunications Policy” and “Decision Support Methods for Telecom Managers” have helped me gain a sound foundation of strategic management and public policies affecting business operations in the telecom industry. However I have become aware that my more engineering background and work experience has not prepared me adequately to deal with the broader strategic questions faced by today’s senior level managers. I am interested in strategy because I feel my strongest skills are in identifying the root causes of problems and developing and implementing lasting solutions to them. My reasons for pursuing an MBA at Smith School are to increase my business knowledge and management skill set, gain credentials and credibility to run my own business in the future and be introduced to a network of potential business partners.
Given my career focus primarily on telecommunications, University of Maryland is, of course, an ideal f...

I am applying to the Smith MBA program at this time because after 3 years of engineering experience, I have come to a crossroads in my career. Though I have relevant work experience, it has not prepared me adequately to deal with the extensive strategic questions faced by senior level managers. My professional motivation for seeking an MBA degree is to supplement my engineering experience and gain high intensity exposure to the strategic business functions which are important to running a successful business. I want to use the knowledge derived from my MS and MBA degrees to become a technically savvy manager who is very business-minded, strategically-driven and acutely in tune with the policy issues that surround the constantly evolving telecommunications industry.
For years now it’s been my dream to attend Melbourne High School. My two cousins have attended the school in the past five years and I’ve heard how enriching being part of the MHS community can be. They have both become excellent role models for me and now I wish to experience being part of the school’s tradition for myself.
Since my first visit at the Air Force Academy as a young boy, I instantly realized this is where I want to go. Ironically, I never why I wanted to go, was it my parents will or the expectations of others and myself? As I started to mature and grow, I learned more about the academy and what it really meant to become a cadet. The opportunity to have a world class education pushed me to pursue acceptance to the Academy. Going to the Summer Seminar will give me a chance to explore many aspects of cadet life to further enrich my interest in the Academy.

Effective competition is widely seen as a key to the development of telecommunications services. The ability of new telecommunications networks to interconnect fairly and efficiently with existing networks is critical to the development of competition. AT&T has undergone numerous changes since its inception in the late 19th century. The McKinsey 7 S framework as applied by Pascale is recommended to manage the changes they are facing to adopt a greater competitive presence in the global economy. In conjunction with this framework, numerous other models were applied to analyse the global competitive position of AT&T. Recommendations for a revised strategy and direction for AT&T have been made throughout this document including two scenarios of how the telecommunications industry might develop towards 2000, while outlining the impact on AT&T.

While studying at the University of Washington, Smith decided to take time off to work as an engineer for Boeing Enterprises. Seeing this unattractive future, he decided to switch to a Business orientation and eventually enrolled into Harvard Business School in pursuant of an M.B.A. (Smith).

My love for business is not something I was born with. It took over a decade of experience and exploration to discover my passion. This discovery began ten years ago when I accepted a position at The Pitney Bowes Corporation. My job was to make unsolicited phone calls to prospective businesses in order to sell our base model postage meter. All that was required was reading a script, word for word, to potential buyers. Yet, after a week of working at Pitney Bowes, I still didn't know important details about the meter, like what it looked like, and how it actually operated. My manager acted a bit surprised when I asked to see the meter, but she agreed, and I took a walk to an adjacent building where I saw first hand what I was selling. It looked completely different from what I had expected, but by viewing and touching it first hand, my ability to convey to people what I was offering improved dramatically. Once I viewed the device, I felt more confident to adlib on the sales pitch. In a couple of weeks reading my hybrid pitch led to a higher rate of sales. People were more apt to buy from someone who sounded like a person and less like a robot. My sales steadily improved and in my third month I was the number one sales person out of over 200 employees. Management implemented some of my changes in the selling process and as a result, overall sales of the entry model postage meter increased significantly.

Ever since I was young I have always been interested in businesses and how they operate, as well as being fascinated by other languages and cultural differences. My passion for the subject expanded when I chose business studies and french, as part of my A-level education. Although these subjects are somewhat demanding, I find them extremely interesting. I believe that a degree combining both these aspects is the correct choice for me. I am confident that a course in international business studies and modern languages satisfies both these interests. I will be looking forward to learning about the international business world and I am relishing the thought of learning to integrate with other European countries. The idea of learning to communicate with other people across the world is something that has always appealed greatly to me.
Public Administration, as a field, had always captivated me right from my undergraduate days. I believe my curiosity for this field comes from my family. Both my father and my uncle were politicians. During my early days, I used to go to my father’s office where I had a great chance to observe different kinds of people with various jobs and interests. This was the first time I learned how mutual interests bring people together. When I understood how public relations work naturally, it forced me strongly to study and comprehend the complex theory of politics. After finishing high school, I made up my mind to pursue a career in Political Science. For this reason, I was enrolled to Istanbul Bilgi University’s Political Science program. After having completed my Bachelor’s Degree, I decided to excel in this field by completing a Master’s degree.
