MBA Admissions Essays - An Entrepreneurial Passion
My love for business is not something I was born with. It took over a decade of experience and exploration to discover my passion. This discovery began ten years ago when I accepted a position at The Pitney Bowes Corporation. My job was to make unsolicited phone calls to prospective businesses in order to sell our base model postage meter. All that was required was reading a script, word for word, to potential buyers. Yet, after a week of working at Pitney Bowes, I still didn't know important details about the meter, like what it looked like, and how it actually operated. My manager acted a bit surprised when I asked to see the meter, but she agreed, and I took a walk to an adjacent building where I saw first hand what I was selling. It looked completely different from what I had expected, but by viewing and touching it first hand, my ability to convey to people what I was offering improved dramatically. Once I viewed the device, I felt more confident to adlib on the sales pitch. In a couple of weeks reading my hybrid pitch led to a higher rate of sales. People were more apt to buy from someone who sounded like a person and less like a robot. My sales steadily improved and in my third month I was the number one sales person out of over 200 employees. Management implemented some of my changes in the selling process and as a result, overall sales of the entry model postage meter increased significantly.
After my days of selling postage meters were long over, and I was in my senior year of college, I decided to start my own company. I wrote two books on college admission and college life and marketed them through the internet. After three month of diligent work, I sold over 500 books and expanded the company to five employees. Since selling only two books was proving so successful, I decided to branch out and try my hands at an affiliate driven superstore. I partnered with web sites like Amazon.com and Reel.com and became officially licensed to sell their merchandise. My time and effort resulted in many visitors to my on-line superstore, but sales were few and far between. The business needed a change of direction.
The Presidential Election of 1820 was during a time of sincere peace and harmony within America. Previous to the election, the Federalists disappeared during the war of 1812 because they were labeled as traitors. Because of this, political rivalries and conflicts were at an all time low, and only one political party with one candidate would run for office. This period was called the “Era of Good Feelings” (MultiEducator) and was a time of nationalism and little sectionalism.

This research paper will begin by briefly introducing the Inca civilization. It will then chronologically identify the factors compromising the Inca’s complex society, discuss the findings, and conclude by offering the author’s interpretation of the research.

Their relative success is no mask for the overall collapse of the Incan civilization. The Incas were no match for the organized, strong, and numerous Spanish conquistadors. Also, their very community-oriented civilization led to virtually zero independence for an average Incan. However, their efficiency, which is transparent through their diligence in every aspect of the Incan lifestyle, is truly inspiring. The mere fact that Incan engineers innovatively designed their infrastructure to correctly harmonize with nature instead of forcing against it, puts into perspective how we challenge technological norms in the 21st century. Their willingness to work together and in that, work hard, asks us to genuinely question how important our personal growth is in relation to the collective betterment of society. The Incas were denoted as the more peaceful organizations as well; they were more inclined to participate in negotiations instead of war. In the same way, they were always prepared for battle – each Incan was ready to enter warfare at short notice. The Incas were skillful, talented, and thoughtful; they may have not survived the Spanish conquest, but their character would certainly prevail

The two different views that were offered in the book were very different from each other. The first view was written by Pedro de Cieza, a soldier who studied Andean Indians. He presented the Incas as peacekeepers, tranquil, grateful subjects, loyal, loved, and did great work for their subjects. The second view was written by Father Cobo a Spanish priest. He described them as tyrants ruling harshly and commanding fear, keeping their subjects in a state of submission.
What I discovered about myself, is that I have a personality type of a “protagonist”. The “Protagonist” basically describes myself adequately, as they find it easy to communicate with others, natural born leaders, and are full of charisma. All of those characteristics tie in to the type of skill and job that I soon want to be possessed in. That job and skill lies in the Marketing field. My attraction draws to this specific job because I am an outgoing person, persuasive, and use my creativity to the best of my ability. I have always questioned the things people do, such as “Why do people purchase they things they do?” and “What inspires and influence consumer purchase behaviors?”. All of this falls under Marketing, which plan programs to generate
After graduation from KOREA University, I decided to enter Hyndai MotorCompany(HMC), which is the largest Korean car manufacturer and global player, to pursue a career as an international businessman. In January 1991, I joined Domestic Finance Team of HMC. My specific assignment was to plan monthly and annual financial schedules for HMC's domestic funding needs. About two years later, in January of 1993, I was transferred to Retail Finance Team from Domestic Finance Team and responsible for financing by the sales and factoring of Car Receivables.
Ever since I was young I have always been interested in businesses and how they operate, as well as being fascinated by other languages and cultural differences. My passion for the subject expanded when I chose business studies and french, as part of my A-level education. Although these subjects are somewhat demanding, I find them extremely interesting. I believe that a degree combining both these aspects is the correct choice for me. I am confident that a course in international business studies and modern languages satisfies both these interests. I will be looking forward to learning about the international business world and I am relishing the thought of learning to integrate with other European countries. The idea of learning to communicate with other people across the world is something that has always appealed greatly to me.
For readers interested in seeing how much more savvy the field has become, go to the following locations: www.netcentives.com, and www.mypoints.com. Both sites advertise and promote a customer-loyalty, revenue-generating ecommerce solution that reads like an affiliate program on steroids. I suggest delving into both of these sites if readers are interested in seeing the latest tactics for marketing in the business to business and in the business to consumer market. Being an entrepreneur, is advanced citizenship, you have to want it real bad. Entrepreneur is not entitlement. Being an entrepreneur is a life commitment. Like in the movie Wall Street, a famous line was "You can 't be a little bit pregnant." The fact is you can 't be an on again, off again entrepreneur.
Many people dream of becoming entrepreneurs someday. But it made me realize that there other factors that needs to be taken into consideration. We need to ask ourselves are we ready to take the challenge to the outside world. Not everyone have the vision, innovation and creativity to become an entrepreneur. The individual must have a positive attitude and accept the responsibility, have discipline to meet their goals, and take action when the opportunity presents itself. Many prefer a job security and rely on a weekly paycheck, while entrepreneurs will take risks and doesn 't have that luxury to know the amount of their income.
