Ludwig Van Beethoven was a German composer. He was born around 1770 in a musical family. He was one of the most important composer of classical and romantic eras in western art music. He began his musical journey at very early age and was taught by his father and composer Christian Gottlob Neefe. As Beethoven was very talented he decided to move to Vienna to study composition. His third Symphony – Eroica- expands the possibilities of the genre, and his Fifth Symphony is often viewed as a model. In his ninth symphony, Beethoven calls for a chorus to join the orchestra for the final movement, a rousing rendition of schiller’s “Ode to Joy”. The fifth Symphony is cast in the standard four-movement cycle but simultaneously presents itself as a unified whole that progresses from conflict and struggle to victorious ending. The first movement begins with the short-short-short-long idea that permeates the entire symphony, a motive that Beethoven described as “Fate knocking at the door.” The second-movement theme and variations provides a respite from the first movement but is haunted by the short-short-short-long motive. The third-movement scherzo transitions directly into the fourth movement without pause. The movement brings back the unifying rhythmic motive. This recollection of motives heard in earlier movements is called cyclical form. Next, was the longest movement, Molto vivace. Dominated by D minor, this movement resembled the introduction of the opening theme in the first movement but with more lightheartedness. Also called a scherzo because of its “dancelike” theme, this section utilized the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Timpani, and Strings. I also noticed a downbeat around every three beats throughout the fast tempo in this section.

This piece beautifully evoked the mood of what I imagined as Beethoven’s dilemma of “fate knocking at the door.” Everything in this composition is built around the four opening notes. The tempo allegro was brisk and lively. The exposition set the tone with string instruments followed by the entire orchestra repeating in a march-like character. The bridge was similar in mood to the opening and was announced by horns. The recapitulation led to a long coda that punctuated the ending which built to an exciting climax accentuated by a dynamic fortissimo resolution to the frenzied tension. Each individual player in this orchestra is a soloist of sorts, playing a completely different piece than the musician seated directly next to them or across the stage. Rather than being written as a concerto, this piece, written in three movements, allows for each of the accomplished musicians to display their skill individually though each solo is not brought to the forefront of the piece, creating a what sounds like a disgruntled compilation of individual pieces that come together. This piece both begins ends with the Funeral March of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony directly tied into the basses, at first it is quiet and difficult to recognize but as the third movement is introduced it becomes more pronounced and evident. Those who were present for this pieces introduction to society were able to see its emotional effect on its composer who had obvious emotional ties to the music. The Beethoven Symphony #9 in D minor is being announced during the 4th movement of the symphony. Typically, in symphonies, the 4th movements take part in the term of Allegro, which means it is played quickly or fast. However, in Beethoven Symphony, the 4th movement opens with a flurry sound and then is introduced by an instrumental recitative. A recitative is a style of music alternating between speaking and singing words on the same note. In a recitative, the music lines are not repeated even though formally composed songs do.
Beethoven’s early life was one out of a sad story book. For being one of the most well-known musicians one would think that sometime during Beethovens childhood he was influenced and inspired to play music; This was not the case. His father was indeed a musician but he was more interested in drinking than he was playing music. When his father saw the smallest sliver of music interest in Beethoven he immediately put him into vigorous musical training in hopes he would be the next Mozart; his training included organ, viola, and piano. This tainted how young Beethoven saw music and the memories that music brought. Nevertheless Beethoven continued to do what he knew and by thirteen he was composing his own music and assisting his teacher, Christian Neefe. The symphony is broken down into four movements. The symphony has such a profound effect on so many people because of its use drama by introducing sudden and powerful chords which quickly grabs the audience’s attention as well as creating a variety of musical ideas through his use of excitement by way of fast and slow tempos. Beethoven was a man with a great amount of talent and influence in his world which does set him apart somewhat from others. He also had a great deal of pain in his life which sets him apart from very few others in this world.

I feel that if Beethoven would never had followed his father’s teachings and learned how to play the piano and violin and learned how to read music, then there wouldn’t be the musical and emotional impact that went along with his journey. Beethoven is not only one of the most influential people to ever have lived, he is also a great role model. His constant act of perseverance up until the point of his death illustrates how if you thoroughly enjoy doing something, don’t let anything, not even a disability, barricade you to reach your goal. Although he had some unpublished works, the ones that were published were beautiful pieces in which people still listen to 300 years later.
Ludwig was already linked to music by previous generations; his father Johann was the son to Louis Van Beethoven. Louis was a Dutch musician who was appointed Kapelmeister at the court of Elector of cologne. When Johann was 16 he was appointed Hofmusikant thanks to the help of his father. Johann fell in love with Maria; Louis at first did not approve of the marriage because of the class difference but eventually gave consent. Louis passed away on December 24, 1773 when Ludwig was only 3 years old. After his passing Johann tried to take over his father’s position at the court but the Electors would not allow it. His rejection slowly led him to alcoholism.
Beethoven, from life to death, was a great musician. As a composer or as a pianist, he is known as great. Many of his pieces are still known to people today. He wrote music from when he was a young boy to shortly before he died, despite going deaf. He is also widely known as the greatest composer of all time. It is clear that Beethoven’s stands as being significant in development of the string quartet to a massive extent in creativity and innovation. His early quartets show great influence of those from the Classical period and with his own, has influenced his contemporaries and later composers. The quartets published later in his life show even greater imagination and use of expression. It is also through similar uses of texture, harmony, rhythm and counterpoint that composers of the Romantic period and the 20th century wrote their own string quartets. Beethoven’s however prove a huge advancement in how string quartets are written and the intensity of emotions that they portray.
His compositions are considered to have led to the development of the sonata form. This was still evident late in his career. Piano Sonata No. 62 in E-flat major (Hob. XVI:52) consists of short, balanced melodic phrases of two, four or sometimes six bars. Each melody in the exposition is evenly divided into an antecedent phrase and a consequent phrase; question and answer. This is a typical characteristic of the Classical Period which obsessed over clarity of structure. Similarly, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor Op. 2, No.1 is clearly divided into an exposition, development and recapitulation. Its lucid exposition of melodic material occurs in balanced melodic phrases. Both of these works contain short codas to each section. Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770. His works are traditionally divided into three periods. In his early period, he focused on imitating classical style, although his personal characteristics of darker pieces, motivic development, and larger forms are already evident or foreshadowed. In his middle period, he is beginning to go deaf, and has realized that he cannot reverse the trend. His works express struggle and triumph. He stretches forms, with development sections becoming the bulk of his works. He is breaking from tradition and laying the groundwork for the romantic style period. In his late period, he breaks almost completely with classical forms, but ironically starts to study and use baroque forms and counterpoint. He is almost completely deaf, and his works become much more introspective with massive amounts of contrast between sections, ideas, and movements. He dies in Vienna in 1827.
