Loyalty In John Updike's A & P

“Naivety is the sister of innocence and the cousin or stupidity” (Pierre Decourcelle). This quote is very true to this story, as naiveness leads to stupidity in the story “A&P” by John Updike. Sammy, a young 19 year old boy who works at the local A&P, sees 3 girls walk into the store in bathing suits. He watches them as they walk the isles, and as they approach, he is infatuated with love. Sammy’s manager, Lengel, approaches the girls and tells them their attire is not store appropriate, and next time they need to wear something over their shoulders. Then, in an attempt to win the girls over, Sammy quits his job, and tells his boss that he did not need to embarrass the girls like he did. One of the first of these internal conflicts Sammy faces comes when the girl gives him the jar she wants to buy. He says, “The jar went heavy in my hand. Really, I thought it was so cute” (Updike 192). This shows that Sammy is captivated by this girl he has nicknamed “Queenie.” The jar goes heavy as he is in shock of this girl he finds very attractive, and shows that this girl is having such a great impact on what he’s doing, whether that would be him taking the jar, or maybe even thinking. Love had taken over Sammy and made it so that even the jar went heavy. This captivation can be dangerous, as it affects the way that Sammy thinks and what actions he will carry out. The reader sees Sammy’s infatuation again when he says, “Now her hands are empty, not a ring or a bracelet, bare as God made them” (Updike 192). This talks about how he saw her hands, and how perfect they are, as the are “bare as God made them.” Sammy is unaware of his own inability to control his emotions and that he could not realize he was running solely off of his own emotions without a need for a logical solution.
