Loyalty and honesty are vital in being a good friend. From the time people are born society teaches that honesty is the best policy and to care for others others more than someone would care for care for themselves, in other words to not be selfish. People are usually taught these values but is it okay to not install these values into one's lifestyle because we are at a young age? People who don’t live by this lesson the author teaches will not only be hurting others but will also hurting others. In the novel, The kite runner the character being focused on that struggles personally in their life is Amir. Amir’s conflict decision to be dishonest and betray his best friend hassan teaches the reader the importance of being a loyal and honest with friends through Amir betraying his friend hassan, lying to him and losing the friend that he’s been so close to for years before even telling him sorry and living with guilt and regret in his adult years until finally going back home to save a young orphan he’s never even met. Amir steals from baba his father and then blames it on hassan. Baba preaches against theft quite often and amir not caring and going against what his father believes steals something from his father anyway. The author states, “when you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth”.(baba) The essence of this quote demonstrates that amir knew better and knew exactly what he was doing. After stealing from his father he then blames the act of theft on hassan. Amir does this not caring about the consequences Hassan has to endure. He leaves him out to dry and betrays his friend hassan just so he wouldn't get in trouble himself this is a reflection of his selfishness and how disloyal he is to his
