Growing up, it’s not uncommon for an individual to picture their “big day.” Imagine yourself walking down the flower-paved aisle, friends and family’s happy and expectant smiles igniting the church walls. Maybe they gasp as they see you, your groom patiently awaiting you at the other end of a once in a lifetime walk. But what if that isn’t the case? What if the person at the other end is someone of the same-sex? Has your opinion changed, your vision of a picturesque moment been suddenly distorted? Instead of bouquets and smiles, picture being forced into course cases and endless files. It’s likely that your prediction didn’t include having to face the refusal of pastors to sanctify your marriage. Or being forced to handle the rejection and alienation of society all as a whole. All because of the gender of the person that awaits at that other end of the aisle.
It’s strange how we grow up being taught to love one another and to be accepting, yet we are quick to judge others when we find that their situations cross our own ethical boundaries. Although social acceptance is yet to come, same-sex couples should be granted the same federal and state benefits and have access to the same rights as heterosexual couples.
Although our Constitution defines America as the land of the free, under which all men are created equal, it seems as if the contrary has actually become true in some cases. Gay marriage, or even just same-sex couples, are seen as shameful. Something that should be hidden. It is common that gays are treated as if they have reason to be ashamed of who they are. ...d be granted the same legal benefits and rights that we often take for granted. When did love become illegal? Why is it okay to delve into the dangers of life, but not okay to be gay? It’s these questions that need to be addressed and reflected on by society. It’s the smallest steps that man has taken that have made the largest impacts for mankind, and the same is true in this case. Progress is progress, and regardless of who lies at the other end of that wedding aisle, we should recognize one thing that love comes in various aspects. If there is anything that we should take from this, it’s that now is the time for us to move forward and recognize that people are all people, with the same bones, the same bodies, and the same ability to love. Now is the time to leave judgment behind for the greater appreciation of a human soul. Now is the time to make love legal.
