In the "Widower's Tango", the relationship between Pablo Neruda and Josie fell apart due to jealousy, distrust, anger, mental abuse, the threat of death, Neruda's infatuation. Pablo Neruda was deeply in love with a woman named Josie, who reciprocated his affection, and they became lovers. Despite their feelings for one another, the bond between them was broken. Josie was too in love with Neruda. She was clingy and worried that Neruda would leave her; however, her fears would be founded, for Neruda only saw her as a passing fancy.

Neruda was deeply infatuated with Josie, but never intended to stay with Josie for the rest of his life. Josie was truly in love with Neruda, but as a result of Neruda's lack of interest in her as a person, she was possessive of Neruda. She was temperamental, she didn't trust Neruda to stay loyal, and she threatened Neruda's life. It was a relationship not meant to last. For her privacy, I'll refer to her as Rin. I was happy for the first few months, but the relationship became suffocating later on. Rin wanted my undivided attention at all times of the day. In addition, Rin had severe anxiety. My love for Rin slowly died and obligation took its place. I felt obliged to stay with her. It's nauseating that I felt this way, but what else could I do? I thought that I had to stay with Rin to keep her safe from herself. As a result, I stayed with her, not as a lover, but a caretaker. One evening with friends, Rin demanded we leave, for Rin didn't like that she had to share me. I couldn't deal with her distancing me from friends anymore. I called Rin and cut all ties between us and our mutual friends. I gave her neither chance for dialogue nor reprisal, just like Paul Neruda. In hindsight, I didn't love her. Because I am a loser who has no chance in love, I was more in love with the idea of a girlfriend. As a result, I didn't love Rin, I loved my girlfriend.
