A book to love but hate, A Thousand Splendid Suns, it was written by Khaled Hosseini about two young girls and their life in Afghanistan. Mariam is the first girl introduced to the reader and the main focus until part two where Laila is introduced. The two soon come together through Rasheed, an abusive man whom they both marry. Through out this book it can be seen that man has the capacity for both good and evil through many aspects of the book including the tone. This theme, man has the capacity for both good and evil, can be seen throughout the book in many circumstances. In the beginning of the book Jalil, Miriam’s father, frequently showed up to visit Miriam and shows his love for her, showing the good he’s done, but later his capacity for evil is shown. It was when Miriam ran away to see her father when she saw, “in an upstairs window. The face was there for only an instant, a flash, but long enough…to see the eyes widen , the mouth open” (Hosseini 32). Miriam waited for her father in the cold, hungry, only to realize that there was nothing to wait for, he was already home. Here Jalil shows evil by letting his own daughter sit in the cold overnight when he could’ve invited her in. In this scene the sullen tone can also be seen and it helps see the evil part of man. All of Miriam’s anticipation and happiness to see her father is destroyed when she realized he let her suffer shows the sullen tone. This sullen tone just brings out the difference in the capacity of man and it especially shows how man can be evil. The tone of the book can help readers understand the theme of A Thousand Splendid Suns by pointing out magnitude of how evil man can be and in contrast the good man can do. Even though not every character is clearly seen being good and evil, with a careful analysis and an open mind good and evil can both be seen.
