Skeletons in the closet aren’t necessarily an assortment of bones. Often times, it’s a collection of memories stored in a secret compartment in the mind which no one except us has access. Many of these memories are happy, enjoyable ones which we love to share with others and do so as often as possible. Along with these are the unpleasant and often painful memories, we would rather forget about but find it impossible. We commonly to refer to these memories as ‘skeletons’ and take great precautions to keep them hidden in the deep recesses of the mind. Knowing if ever disclosed they can cause irreparable damage, by embarrassing or destroying an otherwise unblemished reputation, possibly, ruining lives and relationships. When we say, "I have skeletons …show more content…
The next morning the water running in the shower woke Marlene, but she lay there pretending to be asleep until Jerry dressed and left to play golf with his friend. She showered and dressed for the day. Opening her jewelry box, Marlene wondered which jewelry she should wear today, looking but not finding her favorite ones, she dumped the tray in the middle of the bed, and searched feverishly for her favorite earrings. “Oh, shit, Jerry will kill me if I lost them again, I laid them on the dresser. Where are they?” She asked, looking, on the floor and all around without finding them. “Wait a minute. There’s one,” she said, lifting the corner of the spread and picked up an earring. “Where in the hell is the other one?” She asked looking over the floor. “Well, he can just order another pair,” she said, putting the single earring in the tray. “That will piss him off royally. I dread telling him that I lost the earring since they are so darned expensive.” After checking her hair, and clothes to make sure she looked perfect, picking up the earrings from the bed and put them in the jewelry box, grabbing her purse, keys and sunglasses out the door she
Their memories will give them an ideal live to go towards or a life in which they want to progress from. If an individual chooses to run from the past in which they lived, it is still a component in their life which shaped them to be who it is they became, despite their efforts to repress those memories. Nevertheless, the positive memories of an individual’s past will also shape who they are. Both good and bad memories are able to give an individual a glimpse into their ideal life and a target in which they wish to strive for and memories in which they can aim to prevent from happening once
Sixth grader Jodee enrolled at a private academy and the first few months were without incident. Jodee reveled in having friends and tried to do everything right to stay in good standing. The trouble started when she called her mother to leave the party early. Jodee begged her mother not to tell her what was going on with the twelve-year-olds—but they were all caught in the act. Monday morning at school she found her favorite suede shoes floating in a toilet bowl of urine with a note attached—“Bitch, this is just the beginning.”
Then she saw a greasy china plate that had bread crumbs, cheese and sausage. The pungent of cheese made her stomach grumble. The man was very rude and insulted her because she couldn’t read. Then Frances headed home and on her way, she bumped into a girl with a nice, green, winter coat. She imagined her Ma in that coat, twirling around with a smile on her face. The girl’s mother said a rather offensive sentence about Frances and walked away with her daughter.
“Well how do you explain your behavior the morning I tried to throw away the pearl?” I asked, remembering the sharp pain of his clenched fist making contact with my jaw. “You had become so w...
There have been many times in my life where I have done something that I am not proud of. (Most of these dealing with the men in my life.) Instead of working out whatever or whoever the issue might have been, I push it as far away into my memory as possible. This way I don¡¯t have to think about it. This tactic works very well. I truly don¡¯t remember faces, names or dates of these men. Then there are those days, those rainy lonely days, when these memories or as Millay refers to them, ¡°ghosts¡± come ¡°tapping at my window and wait for me to give them a reply.¡± It is these kinds of days when the ¡°ghosts¡± force you to reflect upon them and don¡¯t lea...
Some memories are realities, and are better than anything that can ever happen to one again.——My Ántonia.
Those who are in favor of retrieved memories state that these memories can be repressed and remain unattainable for years until an individual seeks therapy, where these memories can often be uncovered and trauma related to them can be treated (Freyd, 1994). On the other hand, some individuals have expressed concerns with the concept of repressed memories since, according to them, there is little scientific evidence that can support the theory (Patihis, Ho, Tingen, Lilienfeld & Loftus, 2014). In other words, cases where individuals experience traumatic events but often lack memories of these, often do not provide sufficient reliable evidence to make credible arguments. Memory research offers further insight into the controversial topic of “memory wars” by explaining if the notion of repressing memories and placing them into the unconscious is a feasible hypothesis. Furthermore, research presented in this brief will discuss the reliability and usefulness of using recovered memories as evidence in a court cases. Due to the controversial nature of recovered memories in judicial courts and scientific communities, it is important to consider research in the area to determine truthfulness in allegations involving recovered memories, as these have previously posed

Arriving at Lacey’s house I walk to the backdoor letting myself into the house. Lacey was putting on tanning lotion in the kitchen, “Lacey,” I called to her, “my mom wants me to pick up snacks for the beach, do you want to go into town with me?”, “Sure,” she replied, “do you mind if my cousin comes with us?”, “Of course I don’t mind,“ I answered, “but we have to get moving, my dad only left me the car to use ‘til noon.”
In the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind stresses the importance of memory and how memories shape a person’s identity. Stories such as “In Search of Lost Time” by Proust and a report by the President’s Council on Bioethics called “Beyond Therapy” support the claims made in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Regrettable actions taken in the past may haunt us now as skeletons in our closets and may very well continue to do so in the future. Even so, this purgatory is necessary for our growth, development, and success in the future. We as people learn from our mistakes, and if we fall far and hard enough will be sure not to make the same mistake again. For this reason, as stated by Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, “old memories [are] a chance to reckon with the past” and learning and prospering from such a reckoning is vital.
THE MEMORY WARS OF THE 90´S “The notion of repressed memories has sparked a great deal of controversy in the mental health field. This became especially heated during what became known as the “memory wars” of the 1990s” (Good Therapy, 2013). Repression must be one of the most obsessive and complicated concepts in psychology.
Memory is malleable and can result in suffering from false memory syndrome. Traumatic details can frame normal everyday life negativity affecting one’s ability to function. The focus on unconscious repression has been superseded by a greater understanding of how trauma impacts on the developing self and of how neural mechanisms underpin the deliberate exclusion of unwanted material from consciousness. Emotional trauma memory can be more vividly remembered than non-traumatic memories, so it wouldn’t be repressed. Repressed memories have been traced back to Freud’s theory.
Shame is one of the most devastating emotions a human can experience. It limits your ability to achieve your full potential in all areas of life. His head is down, not looking anyone in the eye, because, “If you really knew me, you wouldn’t love or accept me.” (p. 55) Shame carries the belief that they are a bad person. It is not that bad things happened to them or they did bad things, but that they are a bad person. He might hear voices in his head telling him how bad he is. “Such sexual disgrace connects to the very core of the masculine soul.” (p. 56) The author discuses three types of sexual shame.
