Famous Russian writer, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, once stated that “the battleline between good and evil runs through the heart of every man”. This idea of a war between good and evil inside every human is expanded upon in William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies. Lord of the Flies tells the story of a group of boys who find themselves stranded on an abandoned island with no adults. The boys create rules and elect a leader, Ralph. Ralph’s main goal is to get the boys rescued by using a signal fire. Though the system of rules, leadership, and common goals that the boys created seems to work, eventually their system deteriorates, and the tribe breaks up. Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, Simon is a very kind and selfless human being. An example of his altruism is shown when Piggy receives no meat, and Simon “shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy” (Golding 74). Piggy is often seen as an outcast throughout the novel. His rational decision making and caring nature causes Jack and other savages to not accept him. When Jack and the hunters catch a pig, they decide to give no meat to Piggy. Simon sees this, and even though meat is very hard to come by on the island, he gives his meat to Piggy without regret. In a situation where most people wouldn’t give up their meat, Simon’s good and selfless nature causes him to do so. Simon’s ability to give up his personal belongings so that others can be happy helps to display human nature as selfless. A real-world example of how to help support human nature’s selflessness happened during 9/11. During the attack on the World Trade Center “this man [Welles Crowther] organized a rescue effort on the floors high above where the official rescue workers were able to reach” (Welle’s story). Welles Crowther was just a regular businessman, who was not meant to be rescuing people from the World Trade Center on 9/11. Instead of running from the attack, he decided to help others navigate through the towers and safely get out. In a very stressful and scary situation, Welles puts others’ lives first instead of his. Welles’s selfless nature caused him to put other people’s lives ahead of his in a situation where he could have found safety for himself, and no one would have questioned him. Welles Crowther ultimately died when the tower’s collapsed. His act of selflessness during the attacks helps to display human nature as truly good. One of the main characters in this novel is Ralph, who is chosen to be the leader of a group of boys. He assigns tasks to the boys and tries to keep them accountable for it. However, the boys begin to slack because they can no longer see the point of these tasks and rules. As a result of the constant slacking the boys soon turned into savages. Ralph’s struggle to maintain order amongst the boys shows how without rules it is human nature to descend into savagery due to the avoidance of authority.
When Ralph sees the naval officer that appears on the island to save them, he realizes that he will return to civilization. The shock causes him to reflect on what has happened. As the boys try to organize and formulate a plan to get rescued, they begin to separate and as a result of the dissension a band of savage tribal hunters is formed. Eventually the "stranded boys in Lord of the Flies almost entirely shake off civilized behavior: (Riley 1: 119). When the confusion finally leads to a manhunt [for Ralph], the reader realizes that despite the strong sense of British character and civility that has been instilled in the youth throughout their lives, the boys have backpedaled and shown the underlying savage side existent in all humans. "Golding senses that institutions and order imposed from without are temporary, but man's irrationality and urge for destruction are enduring" (Riley 1: 119). The novel shows the reader how easy it is to revert back to the evil nature inherent in man. If a group of well-conditioned school boys can ultimately wind up committing various extreme travesties, one can imagine what adults, leaders of society, are capable of doing under the pressures of trying to maintain world relations.
Police are supposed to be there to protect and to serve us. Much has been said about blue lives mattering, and they certainly do. However, there is a reason why some people do not trust police officers. It is no secret that many lawmen are made quite bitter by their jobs and this can show in ways which are not only hurtful, but sadistically sardonic and cruel.
