David Chmura Ms. Slubowskee English II Acc 5/31/24 Power but not by Kanye In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Jack struggles to free himself from the power of others, namely Ralph and Piggy. He tries to free himself from this power by disobeying authority and bullying Piggy, creating anarchy and chaos as a byproduct. These events show that a powerful authority is necessary to create a successful society. Firstly, Jack’s aggressive nature and harmful actions towards Piggy show his desire for power on the island. His actions lead Piggy’s voice to become weaker and have less control over the order on the island. Piggy tries to resist this but gets less authority in the eyes of the other boys and is seen as weaker. Piggy tries to maintain rules, but with his voice being drowned out by Jack’s aggressive demeanor, Jack soon gets what he wants: more power. His aggressiveness was not stopped by the authority on the island, Ralph, so it kept happening and caused the unturning of a civilized society. Very early on, Piggy became the target of teasing. Jack made friends and set himself apart as a popular person. His teasing of Piggy causes others to join in. Piggy addresses this after taking the conch and bitterly yelling, “If I say anything. you say shut up; but if Jack or Maurice or Simon--” (Golding 45). Piggy says how Ralph and other people on the island often shut him out and invalidate his ideas. Jack constantly making fun of Piggy doesn’t get helped when at times it seems that nobody on the island cares about Piggy. He encourages people to ignore Piggy. When Piggy gets drowned out by others’ thoughts, he is able to maintain order, eventually dying.
