I am American Edward Barton Hamm and I went ham in the Long Jump at the 1928 summer Olympics in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I won the gold medal broke the Olympic record with a jump of 25 feet and 4 and three quarters inches. Being part of the Olympics was full of wonderful experiences, starting with when I broke the world record at the U. S. Olympic trials. Four years ago I had went the trials in Boston, but I failed to qualify. Fortunately I went this time and was able to participate in the first parade of nations at the opening ceremony in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This parade started with the athletes from Greece, the originators of the ancient Olympic Games, then went alphabetically through every other nation, ending with the host nation which was …show more content…
Netherlands. The Olympic flame was also lit for the first time at the games and was in the cauldron that was on top of a tower in the stadium. As a jumper who was involved in the athletics section of the Games, there was another big difference in those games. Athletics, as well as gymnastics was opened to women for the first time, and there was more than double the female Olympians than four years prior. Going into the Long Jump competition I was very confident about doing well, because after all, I was the world record holder.
On one of my early jumps I had flown a distance over 27 feet, but unfortunately the judge ruled that my foot had crossed the board. After winning the gold medal by half a foot with an olympic record, I stood atop the podium, and it was one of the best moments of my life. I was able to represent my country and show off my skills on an international stage. Although I was both a world record holder and a gold medalist, my world record fell only nine days after a won gold. This was the pinnacle as my career as my jumper, as I got second place in 1930 at the NCAA finals to future Olympic gold medalist Edward Gordon. Although I liked being a jumper, it was impossible to make a living as an ametur athlete, so I decided to drop out of Georgia Tech and pursue a career in business, which ultimately led me to become a manager at Coca-Cola. The games also only took place over 16 days, rather than several months as previous games had done. In addition to these changes, the German team was finally able to compete in the games for the first time since 1912 due to their participation in the first world
war. This was the only Olympics that I went to, but I won many long jumps after. Although I was one of the best long jumpers in the world, I was also a very fast sprinter and competed in the 100 and 200 yard dash. My times were nine and a half and twenty one seconds respectively. I actually beat Percy Williams, the double gold medalist at both of the those distances at the 1928 games. To make a long jump you have to run down a runaway about 20 strides as an elite, but at a lesser level most do about 12. At the takeoff spot it is important to have a great velocity since the greater the velocity, the better the jump. After jumping, usually off of one leg, it is important not the lean or fall back because you are measured by the farthest part back of your body.

I am now officially in my Senior year of Cross Country , and am close to the end of my season. My first race of this year though was a big accomplishment for me, because I hadn`t been able to run. When I ran that race though it made me just so happy I was able to finish it, I was`nt happy with the time, but there is always time for improvement. I was glad to be racing again and being apart of the team again. I believe that my injuries were a barrier in my way, but they did not stop my sports career.

Since 776 BCE, the Olympics have been a way for people of different cultures to come together and compete in friendly competition. In 1892 the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, although it had been over a thousand years since the last game it still had brought together an assortment of different religions and ethnic groups together. Many factors shaping the Olympic Games reflect the changes that have taken place in our world since the last game in 393 CE in Greece such changes include woman’s suffrage, global economy, world wars, and proving competency.
In Ancient Greece they formed the Greek Olympics in the year 776 B.C in which participants participate to honor the gods and demonstrate their physical abilities. What was amazing was that those who participated were only participating in honor and not prizes. Something that they would win was the olive wreath which was basically winning the honor and recognition of the people and the gods. Comparing to the ancient time and now is that there are now commercialized, endorsements, and sponsorships for athletes to represent companies in the Olympics. However, the Olympics still hold true to the idea that it is still a place for participants compete with the best in the world for the honor (gold, silver, and bronze medal). Also, if we look at the sculpture of the Diskobolos made by Myron of Eleutherae it represented the general athlete in motion and would symbolize the ancient times athlete. But something that is different about now and the Greek ...
Ancient Olympic games were created with the primary purpose of developing physical strength and skills for men, while women were forced to follow the path of inequality and predestination. The fact that modern women compete in athletic events such as the Olympics is in many situations the motivation thousands of women have to pursue a new sport or activity. The inclusion of women in the ancient Olympic games as athletes can be seen as a stepping-stone to modern day equal opportunity in sport. The actions of our female ancestral athletes have further liberated women worldwide; providing female role models, health benefits due to increased physical activity, and challenging age-old stereotypes.

A defining moment in my life was when I decided that I wanted to be an athletic trainer when I grow up. I knew I wanted to be athletic trainer because I want to stay in the athletic field once I finish my athletic career. For me there is no better job than one that I can interact with athletes on a daily basis and help them prevent injuries. Knowing my career path early helped me lay out my academic goals, this also brought up some challenges.

The Olympic Games are great events that bring the of the best athletes from every single country on Earth together, and if I was to participate in any sport for the United States, I would choose synchronized high dive. This sport requires accuracy and timing that I can only dream of, as I am not the most punctual, nor accurate on most things. I think that because the time and need for precision would be so important in such a big chunk of my life, I could bring it over to the other parts. Another reason I would participate in a sport that is so far off the ground is that I might find a place to think while plummeting into water at an alarming rate. High diving the closest thing to flying, and birds seem to have a stress free life, so I would
