Hepatocellular carcinoma/Liver Cancer
Abstract
The type of cancer in which i chose to work on is Hepatocellular carcinoma a common type of liver cancer. Liver cancer is a very serious disease just like any other type of cancer. For some years now it has been getting more dangerous as more people are affected by this cancer. It is the most common type of Cancer that comes from the liver and as well as number six on the world ranking for malignancies, as well being the third leading cause to death based on cancer. Having survival chances from 6 to 20mo. This is very concerning as cancer rates have gone down while liver cancer rates have gone up. Depending on how many risks there are for the patient, he may require

With numbers only rising in scales it is only right that a solution to this problem is found. As there may be already treatments for this type of cancer, the cancer might reappear after treatment, just as it happens with other cancers too. Procedures/Treatments for this disease include transplant, live donor liver transplant, chemotherapy, radio-frequency, chemoembolization, ethanol injection and more. These procedures all come with risks which are taken into consideration. The peer review goes more into detail on the chances of survival and the factors and many other substances which may be confusing. All the while the cancer may reappear even after surgery as stated before, by then doctors would probably have the patient do a resection, which is a process in which part of the liver that is contaminated by the tumor/cancer is removed. Patients could opt for a resection as their first option but if their liver is fully damaged they need a transplant. The liver transplant will probably take some waiting as the number of cases increase while the number of donors isn't that much. In case transplant fails patients would have to go through a resection. A …show more content…
He states that ever since 1980 the number of people with HCC has only gone up and it contributes to a lot of death(WJH,2658/2659). The authors also believe that those who undergo transplant have high chances of survival as well as receive good guidelines to follow from the MC. He also believes with changes such as chemotherapy and immunosuppression there is a lot of promise for “curing” HCC. I believe in what the author says as well. Since this article was from 2015 there may as well be new methods to treat HCC. This article serves as an explanation for how HCC is doing and has been doing, a view from the early 2000’s until now. With HCC being the 3rd leading Cancer cause to death it has become one of the top priority for doctors all around, and research for new methods to combat HCC. This article servers as a starting point for those who want to combat this disease. I also agree with the fact that in the future many new possibilities for curing this disease exist. Im sure thats thats what those people from 37 years ago thought. Now there is a solution for HCC but, we want more so there is plenty of ways a patient can get treated, so that there may be more survival
1. Outline the causes, incidence and risk factors of the identified disease and how it can impact on the patient and family (450 words)
The field of Oriental Medicine with a specialization in oncology and advanced pain management is of strong importance to me since cancer has touched the lives of people who are very dear to me.My maternal family is from Anniston, Alabama. Anniston is known as one of the most toxic cities in the United States due to the Monsanto’s Chemical Factory producing PCB (Polychlorinated biphenyls) and knowingly polluting the area. My grandfather died of lung and brain cancer from working in the chemical plant that produces PCB. My mother previously survived thyroid cancer 30 years ago and a cousin who resides in Anniston currently has terminal brain cancer. In addition, cancer is 33% higher in the African- American community than in other races.
I came into this course with a lot of questions in regards to pathology, as well as patient care and how medical practitioners are affected emotionally by it. It was difficult hearing how patients are being diagnosed with cancer and even worse when they are told that they have a short time to live. I once heard in a hospital meeting, that an oncologist sees death every day and that nullifies the pain of losing a patient. I learned that this isn’t true. It is the emotional bond with a patient that helps medical practitioner value life and provide the best quality of life they
Because of advancements in technology and funding survival rates have increased in each patient and quality of life due to better chemotherapy and radio therapy drugs are helping millions of survivors round the world to lead a generally normal life without the risk of the cancer returning.
Treatment is pending on the severity of the cancer. Options for treatment are: surgery, thyroid hormone treatment, radioactive iodine therapy, external radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Depending on the size of the nodule, age and if the cancer has spread, patients are more likely to have more than one treatment. Each treatment plan is developed to meet that patient’s needs. (Thyroid Cancer, 2012)
I have elected to transcribe my proposal argument on issues regarding cancer chemoprevention. I selected this topic because reasonably minute devotion has been given to cancer chemoprevention research in ethical writings, particularly in relation to the huge quantity of moral studies in cancer treatment exploration. Cancer chemoprevention trials test the ability and care of medicinal agents in averting cancer before its manifestation. I believe that phase III chemoprevention issues can be less prevalent by simply ensuring enhanced communication and etiquette between researchers and investigators.
For cancer patients there are several treatment options. Surgery can remove cancerous tumors, chemotherapy uses drugs for treatment, and radiation therapy. The doctor in charge of the patient’s treatment may also choose to use radiation therapy. “Radiation
...rapy and surgery, its used only if the cancer comes back. Surgery is the treatment of injuries of the body by incision with instruments. Depending on what stage the cancer is in, the patient may need multiple surgeries to completely treat the cancer. For the later stages in the cancer, surgery is the most common treatment. The option to have surgery depends on the size and the location of the cancer. With all this being said, if the cancer is found early enough, there is a better chance of it getting cured. Some patients decide to use either chemotherapy or radiotherapy along with surgery, just to be safe. “For many patients, surgery will be combined with other cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy or hormone therapy” (Cancer Treatment Centers Of America parag.3). By combining these treatments, there is a better chance of the cancer being cured.
This statement is very true. When someone is diagnosed with cancer it starts a journey down a road that no one wants to travel on. In recent years, there have been countless trials and tests to find a cure for this terrible disease but none have been entirely successful. There are treatments on the market that can help and slow down the process, but they have various side effects that aren’t quite appealing. The best treatments in todays world include; Rituxan, Avastin, Revlimid, and Gleevec. They all have a different tasks and developments that take affects in the body but each remarkable in its own way.
There are numerous reasons as to why I want to pursue my dream of becoming a radiation therapist. The most important reason is because I love to help other people overcome any problem they are facing. However saving a patient’s life through radiation would be even more amazing. Not to mention, after obtaining the proper education, the salary I receive will be fairly high. Cancer has recently become a part of many families, including my own. I see what a few of my family members are going through and having to struggle with every single day in order to live to see another day, The struggles that they go through have opened my mind in many ways, I wish I was the one that they could come to for a chance of survival, but I can’t, so in order for me to help cancer patients fight for their lives, I will obtain the proper education, licenses, and possess the numerous skills needed by a radiation therapist..
(Levine, 2010) By learning to use certain skills and techniques during a specific time is important to the patient because many techniques may be time sensitive. Knowing when to apply which skills timely would be advantageous because he/she can tackle the issues of the patient and acquire the knowledge to develop attainable goals. When working specifically with cancer patients, a worker has to understand their stage of cancer, their background, and their knowledge about cancer, in order to help the patient properly. Approaching a patient who has cancer can be a difficult process for many therefore workers will have to be sensitive in the way they approach each individual's issues. They also have to take into account that every person is individualized and make sure no bias or assumptions are made especially when their patients are dealing with different stages of cancer. In this occupation, stressing the importance of time is beneficial specifically for cancer patient due to the critical degree of their illness. For example one patient might not vent their feelings about their illness right away and understanding their personality of how they accept the illness should trigger a clue for a worker to not push any questions on the topic until further
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Tumors are then created and interfere with the digestive, nervous and circulatory systems. It is one of the leading causes of death, reaching 8.2 million deaths in 2012. It is expected that cancer will rise from 14 million to 22 million within the next two decades. With over 100 cancer research centers in the United States studying how to treat this disease, people need to understand the importance of donating, as well as the awareness of signs and symptoms in the early stages.
Chemo is best-known for its difficult side effects. Some of the short term side effects of chemo may include hair loss, bad appetite, nausea, vomiting, and mouth sores. A person who is on chemo is more susceptible to infections, bruising, can bleed more easily, and may feel weak or tired. The side effects occur because chemo kills the rapidly dividing cells. Cancer cells may divide fast, but so do some of the healthy cells. Which can include those in hair roots, the digestive track, and the blood. The side effects the chemo may very based upon the specific drug that the patient is taking, and the dosages. The person being treated also helps to very the side effects, because everybody reacts to the drugs differently. Some people may have little

A- I chose to do pancreatic cancer for my project because I love learning about the medical field and how the body heals itself, so I knew I wanted to do something with illnesses and diseases. I didn’t really know what specifically to do, until I started asking around my family, and they said to do pancreatic cancer because it has taken a lot of members in my family. On top of that, the Purple Stride, Columbus was right around the corner so it was going to be a lot easier to get some immediate progress on my project. I was hoping to learn basically what pancreatic cancer works, and what makes it so deadly, just basically researching cancer as a whole. I answered these questions by basically doing a lot of research, and by asking survivors things more personal the internet could not answer. My project is all
