Three elements of fiction are: plot, character, and theme. Plot is the main event that is happening in a play, book, or any piece of literature. Character is any person, animal, or figure represented in literary work. There are different types of characters: protagonist, antagonist, round, flat, dynamic, static, and foil. Theme is defined as a key idea or an original meaning of a literary work that may be detailed directly or indirectly. There are two types of themes, major and minor. A major theme is an idea that a writer replicates his work, making it important. A minor theme references a clue that appears in a work temporarily. He worked at A & P as a cashier. Sammy thought the customers were “sheep” or “pigs.” “Queenie” was described as the “queen” of her group. Sammy was attracted to her. She was scolded and embarrassed by Lengel, the store manager. The friend that wore a plaid bathing suit was the first girl Sammy noticed and judged. Sammy thought she was a follower, but she stood up to Lengel. Sammy thought the third girl was less appealing than the rest of the group. He disliked her the most. Lengel was the manager of A & P. He also worked as a Sunday school teacher. Lengel happened to be the antagonist. The theme of A & P is appearances. The story centered on three women who went to a convenience store. It focused on the fact that the women only wore their bikinis, while they shopped. The young women faced judgment from the store manager, Sammy and other customers because of their outfits and the way they looked. In conclusion, the literary elements of plot, character, and theme were present in John Updike’s short story, A & P. The story took place during a tumultuous time in which a younger generation were breaking free in terms of their behavior and appearance.
