Literary devices are a key part of what make William Shakespeare’s, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet such an interesting story. Dramatic irony lets the viewer know what the characters do not. Along with dramatic irony comes suspense as the reader is on the edge of their seat because the character does not know what the viewer does. Finally the primary literary device, resulting from dramatic irony and suspense, in this story, is tragedy. These three literary devices; dramatic irony, suspense, and tragedy are brilliantly used by William Shakespeare to immerse the audience into the story.
First, dramatic irony is used to inform the viewers of something that the character does not know. For example in this monologue by one of the story’s protagonists,
