The literary criticism “Patterns of Communication” in Great Expectations is an effective literary criticism because it proves there is evidently more communication between characters in the novel than most critics let onto. Ruth M. Vande Kieft, who is the author of this piece, suggests that the majority of the characters in Dickens novels have a substantial amount of communication among themselves. But, the dialogue in the novel depicted is not what we typically observe in the majority Victorian novels. Vande Keift uses evidence in her writing from Dorothy Van Ghent, who suggests there is little interaction and the majority of the main characters attempts fail when they do try and communicate amongst each other. Vande Kieft uses a literary element of language to enhance the argument that communication is an important aspect embedded in all of Dickens novels. Vande Kieft believes that the narrative that Great Expectations has little communication among the characters are just assumptions, and causing these assumptions are people who do not read the novel through a certain lens. Dickens novels are not for everyone as there is layers you have to dig through to understand the basic theme he is trying to convey. Dickens lived a life that was unconventional and it was reflected in his story telling. Vande Kieft believes relationship and ties amongst characters in novels do not have to be logical or have a rational process of articulation. Another reason why many suggest that Charles Dickens novel has little communication among the important characters is according to Vande Keift, the idea of misunderstanding. Vande Kieft points out the lack of knowledge that certain characters have and furthermore, how Pip interacts with Joe. Joe and Pip clearly do not have a stereotypical relationship that is usually depicted amongst family members and this is where many critics observe a disconnect. Charles Dickens (the author of Great Expectations) and Charlotte Brontë (the author of Jane Eyre) both grew up during the early 1800s. Growing up during the same time period, each author incorporated elements of the Victorian Society into these novels. Both novels depict the protagonist’s search for the meaning of life and the nature of the world within the context of a defined social order. In essence, the two novels encompass the all-around self-development of the main characters, by employing similar techniques. Each spurs the protagonist on their journey by introducing some form of loss or discontent which then results in the main character departing their home or family setting. In both Great Expectations and Jane Eyre the process of maturity is long, arduous, and gradual, consisting of repeated clashes between the protagonist's needs and desires and the views and judgments enforced by an unbending social order. Eventually, towards the end of each novel, the spirit and values of the social order become manifest in both of the main characters Pip and Jane Eyre, who are then included in society. Although the novels end differently, both contain an assessment by the protagonists of their new place in that society. Great Expectations and Jane Eyre, despite exhibiting considerable differences in setting, gender roles, and education, nonetheless convey the same overall purpose – that of the portrayal of the journey from ignorance to knowledge in Victorian Society, starting from childhood to adulthood, enhanced through the use of the protagonists Pip and Jane Eyre.

Analysis of the Opening Scene of the BBC Production of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
No novel boasts more varied and unique character relationships than Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. This essay will serve to analyze three different relationships, paying special attention to the qualities that each uphold. Dickens created three types of character relationships: true friends, betrayed friends, and loving relatives.
Fiction performs a number of functions, and among these are helping us to understand the world, and helping us to understand the human condition. What is taken from a work of fiction is, however, dependant on who is reading it at the time. In the case of Great Expectations there are a number of themes running through the text including betterment through education, what it is to be a gentleman, respectability and crime, parental /family ties, and industry and idleness. Many of the original readers of the work were not concerned with analysing these various themes, and how Dickens put the work together. Rather, it was enjoyed as a populist piece of fiction which simply told the story of a young orphan from humble beginnings who rises to become a wealthy gentleman. Critical analysis of the text, both contemporaneously and retrospectively, reveal additional depths of the novel. For the purpose of this assignment I will discuss the autobiographical elements of the novel, the influence of Dickens life on the characters and narrative in the novel, and some of the themes running through the novel, which will illustrate how Great Expectations allows us to look inward to understand ourselves. Dickens also makes a number of points about the world in this work, with particular attention paid to childhood, religion, education and the role of women in Victorian society. The type of novel, a bildungsroman, can also tell us about the world at the time Great Expectations was written.

Charles Dickens is well known for his distinctive writing style. Few authors before or since are as adept at bringing a character to life for the reader as he was. His novels are populated with characters who seem real to his readers, perhaps even reminding them of someone they know. What readers may not know, however, is that Dickens often based some of his most famous characters, those both beloved or reviled, on people in his own life. It is possible to see the important people, places, and events of Dickens' life thinly disguised in his fiction. Stylistically, evidence of this can be seen in Great Expectations. For instance, semblances of his mother, father, past loves, and even Dickens himself are visible in the novel. However, Dickens' past influenced not only character and plot devices in Great Expectations, but also the very syntax he used to create his fiction. Parallels can be seen between his musings on his personal life and his portrayal of people and places in Great Expectations.

These elements are crucial to the structure and development of Great Expectations: Pip's maturation and development from child to man are important characteristics of the genre to which Great Expectations belongs. In structure, Pip's story, Great Expectations, is a Bildungsroman, a novel of development. The Bildungsroman traces the development of a protagonist from his early beginnings--from his education to his first venture into the big city--following his experiences there, and his ultimate self-knowledge and maturation. Upon the further examination of the characteristics of the Bildungsroman as presented here it is clear that Great Expectations, in part, conforms to the general characteristics of the English Bildungsroman.
