This is a short story by Kate Chopin where a young wife is thought to live wonderful house, with her husband. The appearance of a happy marriage to outsiders, is not what actually is happening inside the home. In the beginning of the play Nora seems to be a spoiled housewife with no regards for money and doesn’t have a sense of savings. Later the reader finds out that she has went to great lengths to not only save her husband’s life, but to repay a debt that she accumulated without her husband’s knowledge. Helmer starts out as the loving, devoted husband, but when he finds out of his wife’s loan he turns on her and the threat to his social standing and reputation are too much for him. It’s not about his wife and her feelings it becomes all about him. Krogstad starts out as a bitter, spiteful, blackmailer, and when life starts to turn around and he finds love he also finds forgiveness and peace. Mrs. Linde begins as someone who appears able to stand on her own two feet, but later the reader realizes that she is lonely and just wants someone to care for. When Nora began to understand Helmer didn’t love her, he loved the idea of her as a pretty woman he was married to, Nora realizes how degrading her role as a woman in the household was. She saw the freedom of Mrs. Linde to be able to obtain a job in her husband’s bank, and the freedom of being a single woman to think, act, and do what she wanted to do, not what her Father wanted her to do, or her husband. Nora realized her identity was solely in her Father, and in Helmer, and the unhealthiness of this reality. Nora wanted to be treated as a human being and not as an object. To be accepted as such would be the struggle of women in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Nora thought in leaving Helmer she was leaving the problem of feeling like an object all together. Little did she realize she was going to have to face the other Helmers in society.

A contrasting difference in the characters, are shown not in the characters themselves, but the role that they play in their marriages. These women have different relationships with their husbands. Torvald and Nora have a relationship where there is no equality. To Torvald Nora is an object. Hence, she plays the submissive role in a society where the lady plays the passive role. Her most important obligation is to please Torvald, making her role similar to a slave. He too considers himself superior to her.

Ibsen opens the play with the perfect home where Nora is planning Christmas and how she is planning every detail with no concern for her own needs. Torvald asks Nora, “what have you thought of for yourself?” (Doll 1). Nora replies that she doesn’t, “want anything at all.” (Doll 1). Nora displays her own selfless attitude as she prepares to provide all these great gifts for the family and nothing for herself. When Torvald pushes Nora to choose something, she chooses money so she can spend it on things for others and not for herself. The playful nature between husband and wife displays the perfect bond between them. The Hellmer’s are a middle class family and since Torvald got a promotion and is getting a raise, they can afford to spend more lavishly. They don’t have to worry about money anymore. They also have a Christmas dinner planned where they invite the sick Dr. Rank and then Nora’s friend Mrs. Linde. Nora convinces Torvald to try to see if he can get Mrs. Linde a job at the bank because she has fallen into some tough times. The relationship that Nora has is a great one that sets up this perfect family life for her.
Nora engages in a mutually dependent game with Torvald in that she gains power in the relationship by being perceived as weak, yet paradoxically she has no real power or independence because she is a slave to the social construction of her gender.
