We all have family, we all have traditions. Some families really take traditions seriously and other families don't put a lot of pressure on it. If you don’t like the traditions that your family has then you shouldn’t be forced to follow it. No one's life should be based on traditions. In the novel Like Water for Chocolate, written by Laura Esquivel Tita wants to get married but her mother won’t allow her to marry anyone because Tita must take care of her until she dies. Culture is part of where you come from and where your parents come from. One’s traditions should never stop them from doing the things that they love to do. Some families think the only right thing to do is to follow traditions. Most families believe this way because that’s the environment they grew up in. Just like Titas’ mom. Today, everyone does what they wish to do. If a person only lives only by a culture they might not be able to do the things that they want to do. Mama Elena tells …show more content…
Tita that “You know perfectly well that being the youngest daughter means you have take care of me until the day I die”, (Esquivel, 10). When Tita hears her mom she feels mad and just wants to get married anyway. Mama Elena has this way of thinking because that’s what her mom did to her. This quote just shows that Titas mom doesn’t want Tita to get married and only wants Tita to take care of her. In this novel Mama Elena is always following their traditions. Tita doesn’t like that traditions because it stops here from getting married to man she loves. Everyone one should respect traditions. Even if they don’t know anything about it or even if they don’t like that tradition. In Like water for Chocolate, Titas’ whole life was based on culture and traditions and she just wasn’t happy. Tita wasn’t able to get married to the man she loved because of her family's traditions. Mama Elena also says “For generations, not a single person in my family has ever questioned this tradition, and no daughter of mine is going to be the one to start”, (Esquivel, 11). The fact that Mama Elena has been following this tradition her whole life it hard for Tita to change her moms mind. Mama Elena also cares about the way her family looks at her so therefor she must not change any of their traditions. In this novel Tita always lived by traditions whereas Titas’ sister Gertrudis got married and ran away and didn’t care what her mom had to say about any of it.
Gertrudis lived her life they way she wanted to and had no care about what people would say about her. Soon Titas mom died and that gave Tita some relief and now she could actually get married to Pedro the man she loved. Rosaura Titas older sister got married to Pedro under Mama Elena’s saying. Rosaura tells Tita that they need to have a talk about what happened. Rosaura during the discussion says to Tita “According to family tradition, which you were breaking”, (Esquivel, 213). When Rosaura says this to Tita we can tell that even Rosaura was following the traditions. Now that Mama Elena is dead Tita starts to get more involved with Pedro. Tita has always been more on the shy side and not standing up to her mother but now she is just yelling at everyone and finally realizes that all her problems have just gone away and she can happily be with
Pedro. A person's life shouldn't be based on culture and traditions only. A person’s life should be based on what they want and their own opinions on life. Everyone is different and everyone thinks about life and love differently. No one should be forced to live the life they don't want to live. Your life is what you make it so just be happy and don’t hold back.
Similarly, Amy Tan also has stated in her article, “Fish Cheeks,” that we shouldn’t try to change who we are or what culture we come from, yet we should accept those and carry on those cultural traditions with ourselves. That is how we are unique in our own ways. Given that, we could also see the same message being portrayed by Dumas in her article, “Sweet, Sour, and Resentful,” that her mother even though was getting tired of the every weekend feasts she had to prepare for her guests but she did it anyways and by the end she was proud of what she has accomplished and being able to carry on her Iranian traditions alongside with her. I agree because in the end our cultures and our traditions is what brings each one of us closer together and brings happiness within
Write-up: Like all the daughters of Mama Elena, Gertrudis despised her very oppressive mother. She escapes her mother by running off with a rebel soldier, Juan Trevino due to a reaction of Tita's Quail in Rose Petal Sauce recipe.
Culture often means an appreciation of the finer things in life; however, culture brings members of a society together. We have a sense of belonging because we share similar beliefs, values, and attitudes about what’s right and wrong. As a result, culture changes as people adapt to their surroundings. According to Bishop Donald, “let it begin with me and my children and grandchildren” (211). Among other things, culture influences what you eat; how you were raised and will raise your own children? If, when, and whom you will marry; how you make and spend money. Truth is culture is adaptive and always changing over time because
In the beginning of the story Tita and Pedro seem to favor each other. Pedro then asks his father is he may ask for Tita’s hand in marriage. During the Meeting Mama Elena explains to Pedro and his father that Tita cannot marry, because she is the youngest daughter and must take care of her in Elena’s old age. Elena then proposes her other daughter, Rosaura to Pedro. Pedro then accepts and explains to his father that he just

Some uphold their culture by going to family get-togethers along with their children to meet their grandparents, educating the children
What is culture? Many people ask themselves this question every day. The more you think about it the more confusing it is. Sometimes you start leaning to a culture and then people tell you you’re wrong or they make you feel like a different person because of your culture. I go through this almost every day. Because of the way I was raised I love Mexican rodeo but I was born and raised in Joliet. This can be very difficult trying to understand culture. I live in this huge mix of culture. Culture is personal. People can have many cultures especially in America and because of globalization. Cultural identity is not one or the other, it is not Mexican or American. Cultural identity is an individual relevant thing.

Pedro ends up marrying one of Tita's sisters, Rosaura, in order to be close to Tita. Tita was practically raised in the kitchen and she communicates her love for Pedro through the dishes she prepares, and he in. turn shows his affectionate gratitude. Tita's quest to be with Pedro is over. shared only with Nacha, the main cook and helper at the ranch.
When couples decided to get married, something they need to consider is if they would like to follow the tradition of
Tita is a good hearted and strong spirited woman. Mama Elena only made Tita stronger by the way she treated her. Tita looks up to Gertrudis because she is happy and got to do what she wanted, when she wanted and with whom she wanted. In the end I believe she was happy but at very high price to pay, her life. Tita loves everyone in her family even the ones who treated her badly and this is what binds her to them. Tita has some hatred towards her mother because of her not letting her marry and also shows some hatred towards Rosaura for marrying Pedro when she knows that she is in love with him.
Culture can be defined by one’s family history. Without a doubt, the way a person a raised has a huge impact on their life. Parents teach their children how to be a good person based on their own beliefs. If a parent grew up from a poor background, then that parent may instill the importance of education and hard work. If a parent grew up being overweight, then that parent may instill the importance of eating healthy and exercising. In other words, the next generation is learning behavior patterns to hopefully better themselves as a whole.
The Theobroma cacao tree is where it all started. Olmecs, Aztecs, and Mayans were the original consumers of cocoa: they would form it into a drink and ingest it for medicinal reasons (Allen Par. 7). The Spanish then brought it back to Europe and continued to treat a variety of ailments with it (Allen Par. 7). In the last 40 years people have started to question the health benefits of chocolate, but new research is starting to prove that the Olmecs, Aztecs, Mayans and Spaniards were not too far off. Now, the pods from the tree containing cocoa beans are collected, and the cocoa beans are taken out of the pod (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). The beans are then fermented, dried, roasted, then ground to make cocoa liquor (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). The cocoa liquor is then combined with sugar, vanilla, and cocoa butter to make what is now known as chocolate (Healing Foods Pyramid Par. 15). Controversy over the health benefits and detriments of chocolate is slowly subsiding, but there are many things that a lot of people still do not know about how chocolate can affect ones health. Chocolate is misunderstood.
What is culture? Culture is identity; it’s the indigenous or non-indigenous ideology, habits, customs, appearances and beliefs that people are either raised by or adapt to from different nations surrounding. It is a network of knowledge shared by a group of people. Culture consists of configurations, explicit and implicit, of and for behavior obtained and spread by symbols establishing the distinctive achievement of human groups including their embodiments in artifacts; the vital core of culture consists of traditional ideas and especially their attached values. Culture systems may, on one hand, be considered as products of action, and on the other, as conditioning influences upon further action.
Culture is a society’s set of unique patterns of behaviors and beliefs (Rohall, D. E., Milkie, M. A., & Lucas, J. W. (2014). Social Psychology Sociological Perspectives (3rd ed.). NJ: Pearson). Culture can be identified in many ways, it can be identified by your family, the way you feel about certain things, your decision making, and so forth. For example, I was raised in a Mexican and sort of religious household so for me, my values and beliefs differ from other peoples’. My Mexican culture taught me to value our hard work and appreciate what we have in our lives. With that belief I grew up always appreciating what I had and even what I didn’t have at times. Another concept my culture taught me was to always respect my elders and show them manners regardless of their race,
